I remember an article in HotVWs back in the mid to late 1970's. Somebody wanted to make a "Sports Bug" 1973 Super Beetle special edition equivalent from a '66 or earlier Beetle. It utilized the same '68+ late bumpers painted satin black, silver-painted wide-5 Sprint Star wheels, the SportBug Saturn Yellow body color, and I think the same 2-color beltline wrap-around stripe. I don't remember if the taillights remained the '62 - '67 style or if the '68 "tombstone" type were used as an interim-period upgrade. It looked sharp.
