I thought I would add these pictures to this thread.
NOS doors. This version of the door has some early and some late features, not an exact copy of a version installed on a production bus. These were sold at the dealership.

Those pictures are out of the classifieds. The doors are for sale (not by me).

I thought they were interesting - the indent by the door handle is different than the other styles pictured. Similar to the push button style, but w/o the second hole drilled?

Thanks for the confirmation, this is what is listed in the first post of this thread and matches my '63.

I have also learned that the 66/67 internal door handle (flippers) are chrome for deluxe and appear to be ivory for commercial. I guess they could be ivory for standards as well but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the detail Everett this is great! Its flippin great! Very Happy

In the first part of the this tread you said---
Quote:
Early 1961-mid-64:
Driver's side: 211 837 205 E/F
Passenger side: 211/221 837 206A
(There may be some variations, such as 205D instead of 205E/F, more information welcome)

I posted because the letter designation seemed to be outside your description? Mine is D/E and not D/F? It seemed different to me. Maybe I didn't understand you. Are the orientation of the letters random? Is there a F/E?
--- or---
Is E/F really F over E? I assumed it was E over F.

Can I be more confusing Laughing

Yes a very good thread, never knew there where two ice pick handles(recessed and non). I have been looking for a recessed door for my 63, found a few but way too expensive. (800 for two bare doors, they were very nice) But I guess since they were produced for a shorter time they would be harder to find good ones.

I posted this almost a year ago, seems pretty cheap compared to some of the ones for sale now. Shocked Oh well, the search continues Smile

Here is a breakdown.
This thread is now in the Bus FAQ. If anyone has any further input, feel free to add it.

Inner Door Handles:
Early Buses, up to 16 Mar. 1960 VIN # 584674 used a chrome handle with a rib down the center:

More photos:

60-65 Buses use a larger plastic door handle.
Deluxes were chrome.
Push-button front doors use an inner handle with a screw in the center.
Examples:

the later style interior door handles showed up on deluxes in '59 with the '59 model year change. standards and everything else had the early style interior handles until the the plastic interior door handles showed up in mid '60. this change is documented in all the part lists.

deluxes always had chrome interior handles.

PostPosted: Mon Nov 03, 2014 12:36 pm    Post subject: correct handles wrong bases? Reply with quote

please help.........although i have read the threads i seem to be going around in circles.
i have a 1961 samba with recessed door handle.
i have the recessed bases but have these handles
1 x 221 637 206 with a vw logo and the please excuse me bum this is the passengers side
1 x handle which is the lockable one but i cant read the part number all i can see is part of the vw logo but the part number is scratched out........i am sure its original as it has the tiny screw hole that i think holds the lock in.
my problem is that from the pictures on this post my bases are recessed but my handles are for the other type of base....
please help.
kindest regards
rob
