Beautiful Ghia, great job done by you. It's a pity for the incident, I hope everything will be done without a trace. |

I buy single stage all the time. Odd that PPG won’t sell theirs here or is it the body shop you use won’t spray it? I think only hobbyists are allowed to buy it in CA.
Single stage is easier to blend in to a panel than clear. You are right, there is no natural break line on a Ghia, but a good shop could use the crease between the nose and fender, the top of the ridge on the fender and the A pillar to help disguise it.
Either way, keep in mind you get to pick the shop. Pick the best based on recommendations from classic car guys. What a bummer…. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Man Darrel that really sucks! But I can appreciate your understanding of the lady's situation, it would be difficult to be angry at her, despite the damage to your fine Ghia. Unfortunately even though we spend so much time making these cars look and run good, by driving them they will eventually get banged up. I hope she's ok and not too upset by the situation especially since she has an appreciation for cars and was honoring her husband. As good as you made your Ghia look before, no doubt you'll bring it back to how it was.

There have been several people posting about taking their Ghias to car shows and their awards, congrats all...
So. i decided to stop by a local mostly muscle car show near my house. Its a first Friday of every month affair and only a mile away. Few VW's but plenty stop by to appreciate my Ghia. Just to let you know, I didnt win Top 10, Didnt win Best Paint nor furthest traveled. What i won was much different. I ended up with Most Damage Sustained while Parked.
I had not even been there 4 minutes. I parked, walked away to register and on the way back there was already a crowd around my car, Cool I thought. Til I got there. Headlight was cock-eyed, ring badly bent, side of headlight bumped, bumper pushed and bent. The best part was the 100% of all the guys at the show, everyone felt bad, really for both parties. Ive never talked to so many people even if they were mostly offering condolences on the mishap.
The old lady that hit me wasnt new to car shows. This monthly show is put on by CalRods an old school muscle car club thats been around for 40+ years. The ladies husband was in CalRods for over 25 years, he had 2 cars he showed but he had passed on a few months ago. She was there to see old friends and have dinner at the show with them. She was upset and shaking. I walked her back to her car had her sit down, have some water and we traded info. I talked her into staying and eating with friends before she drove home.
I'll contact Insurance co and find out how they want to handle it and report how this progresses. My paint is a custom mix of PPG Concept single stage, a paint you cant get in California, its a one piece car, hard to blend in a repair, i'll need another big script Hella trim ring, bumper corner....I havent looked closely yet.

Darrel, your grab handle... It's an early one right? Are they all the same? Found one in the classifieds. Wondering if the ends will buff out as yours did? It's not in the best shape. But with a little elbow grease, and wrapped as your is, could be a nice touch.

Good that you got your wife involved and props to her for stepping up. Good luck. |
I think you (we?) should start a thread detailing the work our wives do during the restoration projects we are so keen to brag about. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Darrel, my wife and I bought some automotive (fake) leather. She is really good at sewing, and is certain she can do a French stich. Wondering if it's just sewn in a straight line and stretched to the contour of the dash when you glue it??
Thanks. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

Darrel,
Did wrapping the dash in leather tighten the gaps on either side with the pillars? I will be doing the same, and am wondering if widening the dash (if needed) will help with a quality fit. Thanks! |
If you need to make the dash fit flush on the sides you could, like I did, pad it with thin layers of foam glued to the pad until you're satisfied before you cover it (like Darrel's, and with French stitching to boot). _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Kudos, Darrel! That article highlights a number of your nice touches, and it's especially cool to see Pete's SyncLink in the land of the cross bar linkage. |
