My new tencentlife engine arrived at my mechanic this afternoon. Otto the Vanagon is loaded up with fuel system and tencentlife/RMW exhaust to drive up to the mechanic tomorrow morning to start the uncrating.
9:00am can't come soon enough!

Today's progress:
Uncrated everything. I had a big !#$$-eating grin on my face, while my mechanic commented on how well organized and assembled everything was.
Took stock of parts that I was bringing into the mix as well as the parts supplied by tencentlife and Rocky Mountain Westy. Looks like no trips to FLAPs needed at this point.
Unfortunately, that's all we got done this morning. Mechanic (small one-bay shop) has a Jetta in there that is waiting on parts for delivery on Monday. We'll get cracking on the install on Tuesday.
If my mechanic will tolerate me, I'm planning on hanging out with the camera and will report back photos to this thread.
... can't wait for Tuesday... can't wait for Tuesday... _________________ Marius Strom Otto: 1988 Vanagon Syncro Westy Camper

Today was Day 1 of the marathon engine installation. I showed up at the mechanic's shop at 9:15am to start working with him. I had dropped Otto the Vanagon off last night to give the exhaust and engine time to cool down after the 30 mile drive.
3 hours after starting, the old engine was on the ground. We had undressed it (power steering pump, alternator, dizzy, etc.) while in the car. After noon was spent primarily clearing exhaust, motor mounts, and associated bits off the old engine to get it back in the crate. Cleared up a lot of room this way at the mechanics.
We spent the last 3 hours or so dry-fitting the new RMW/tencentlife WBX-aust to the new tencentlife waterboxer. After a little bit of cussing at engine tin, we think its on enough for the engine to go back into the car, but by then it was 5:30pm and we called it a day.
Tomorrow's agenda: the mechanic will work solo on fixing up the remainder of the cooling system (fixing the plastic hose ends, replacing every hose in the system, etc.) and installing the oil cooler that I ordered with the engine. Engine should go back into the car on Thursday along with a new fuel tank and other bits, and we hope to have first crank on Friday morning. _________________ Marius Strom Otto: 1988 Vanagon Syncro Westy Camper

Spring loaded push rod tubes right off the bat.
Wonder why he does that?
Looks sweet.

I believe 10 cent does the spring loaded push rod tubes right off the bat because it makes torquing down the head easier, because the push rods are not trying to be squeezed and messing with the torque. may (and after 10cents post must) have been some one else who does this.
