I just saw this thread on the same day that we had to tow because the clutch wore out.
Can we consider that more normal wear & tear instead of an emergency breakdown of an unreliable Vanagon? Wink

How far away from home were you? If your starter is in good shape, it's fairly easy to drive a manual in clutchless mode.

My daughter was camping 2 hours from home. Some people stopped and tried to help her. She said that they taught her how to drive it without the clutch, but she didn't want to drive it that long, through a mountain pass, and through city traffic.

Excellent choice. I can think of a lot worse places to blow a brake line.

I'd wager a guess that the 12v heating element wire had it's fiberglass sheathing compromised to some extent and shorted out.
though the fuse by the drivers door should have blown, unless it's bypassed or modified.

+1000 points awarded to daughter for sound judgement

10 minutes from home on country road, yes.

City traffic, mountain passes, no.

Not an emergency, just getting towed to the shop across town. He towed it backwards?

Seems hard on whatever locks the steering, but I guess it's fine.

Head gasket went south, Stuck in death Valley. Living proof that even Subaru engines have problems.
AAA is the worst. They lie and just dump you off where they want to. They dumped my Van at some shop in Pahrump Nevada that diagnosed my van as a Bad intercooler.
I would never have an unknown shop do any major work for me. I paid to get it Trucked home to my Mechanic in the bay area.
A costly Vacation for sure.
