Busted throttle cable. |
I thought rigging a make-shift hand-control throttle out of ratchet-straps/rope/electrical-wire/knee-socks routed through the cabin up to the front was par for the Vanagon course? Or if your daisy chain isn't long enough because you opted for ankle socks that day, then you have your buddy work the gas from the back seat while you revel in the driver seat in the joy of having one less thing to do with your right foot! |
Nah, flex ties work great. I just doubled the broken end of the cable back on itself then daisy chained a couple of flex ties back to the accelerator lever (or whatever it is called, the part the cable used to attach to).
Then I ordered a cable and a spare. They arrived quickly but the cable ties lasted for nearly a year before I "got around" to fixing it properly.
As for the lack of clutch, everyone should know how to start and shift without out a clutch in case of an emergency. _________________ Ohio Valley Tribe, Full Moon Bus Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/294422277314227/

Had to rely on my Caravan with Class III hitch, UHaul and some old cracked tires last New Years eve to get this one home.
82 Diesel and extra watercooled parts in back will make a donor engine swap for my 86 Westy with a Inline 4 some day ...
Needed a come-along to get it loaded onto the dolly, then needed a tow to get up the icy driveway at the guys house ! Once on the highway drove it 2 hours home going between 40-50 MPH on major highways. Great adventure ...

Ugh. Imagine 3 to 4 hours of obstacle after obstacle being drug through the slick rock. AAA wouldn't come out
Link
Everytime they got me in the middle of a steep climb I'd reflect back on this reassuring video

At the beginning of the ordeal, the other Syncros drivers in our group took up a collection and gave them some $ for their efforts and I sent them all a token of our appreciation from home. They were a great group of Jeepers that worked their tails off to get us out of there. _________________ Tom, Juanita, Iggy & Abbey the Dirty Desert Dogs

Well, my CV bolts sheared off on left-rear, right in the middle of a busy Bellevue intersection (4th and 110th).
These should be longer :p
AAA to the rescue, towed to North Westy where they did their best to get me on the road. They couldn't get two of the sheared off bolts out, and we've now got some CV joint kits on order anyways due to misc. damage. Apparently Lobro CVs are in short supply, and there'll be some delay...
In the meantime, North Westy loaned me a sweet custom-painted weekender (The Green Machine). I'm not sure it is a good thing or a bad thing to have a VW loaner?

If you have a Westy and you're considering AAA, get the Plus or Premium. A little more expensive but they won't argue with you about being an RV. Comes with motorcycle coverage, too. Which we have.
Westy being towed after losing the clutch just after the toll plaza west of Topeka on I-70. Not my best moment...lots of people came to watch and comment on how awesome it was to see it, though. |

Tow on Hells Revenge Syncro Solstice. Thanks to a Jeep! But we made it out under our own power. Syncronicity can't say I didn't warn you, but thank God for Jeeps, sorry you did not make it out under your own power! Soft sand kept going over, the camera angle is off. Dam near could of pushed it over by hand!

Only 6 hours of ownership and now this?
In Chile, on the Pan-American Highway the tolls cover towing to the nearest safe off ramp. In our case, we got 6.7 miles on a flat bed out of the deal. And the highway workers helped my parents flag down a big bus to take them to Concepcion, thus avoiding a long night.
After the very professional and free tow off the highway, my brother and I waited for a friend-of-a-friend with a home-made tow bar to arrive and help carry us the remaining ~88 miles home. The tow bar was connected to the weak front factory tow hook on the passenger side using some thin rope. This was then connected to another van ladder using similarly thin rope. Needless to say, the rigid towbar was did little to prevent the vehicles from running into eachother. There were a few issues on the ride home. (1) We ran out of battery running the hazards. For the last two hours we had no lights as huge logging trucks whizzed past us at 3 times our speed. My brother held up his cell phone with a flashing red screen as a sort of dim beacon of our presence (2) We burned out the front drivers side brake trying not to slam into the towing van ahead of us. We would periodically stop and let the smoking breaks cool off. The mechanic poloting our vehicle home used the manual transmission to slow us down (some) or the emergency break. (3) The front passenger bearings began to whine during the last couple hours. Not sure why. We made it home (relatively) safe at 5am. In the end, the total tow cost $200 for time, gas and tolls. Not bad for 8 hours of hard, risky work. We'll see what damages resulted from the tow. If only there was AAA in Chile.
Still don't know quite what went wrong to cause the breakdown in the first part but I hope to make progress on this subject in the coming week.
