I've got one like the bottom of this picture, but it was hacked for my CD player (bought it off the Samba classifieds that way). It looks good in my 65 Notch.
As for the rear seal, I'd do both sides, and check the wheel cylinders while I'm in there (you already have the drum off ). Maybe even clean up the brakes too. Do a very, very light cut on the drums as well. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Good morning
A couple of updates. I pulled the front disks off to clean them up. The pistons moved so they seem OK but there was lots of rusty dirt and crap that contributed to poor braking. With new seals and boots they should be ready to go.
And rather than buy a radio mounting plate, I made my own
I see that CIP is out of rear seals so I will have to wait for them before I can finish the rear brakes. With the fronts off and cleaned up I should be able to bleed the brakes and at least have that aspect done.
Still lots of other things to do.

Howdy Folks
I've been busy and not had too much time to post here. Sorry. Christmas is just around the corner so I thought that this would be a good time to update you. There have been a number of items that I needed to address in this re-restoration.
It turns out that the gas-tank liner people did not do a good job way back when. Here's the fuel sending unit and you can imagine what the inside of the tank looked like.
I took the tank to another place and now it is very clean and re-sealed with a warranty. I just need a new fuel sending unit.
I moved the oil pressure gauge to the clock position on the dash. The clock didn't work and there did not seem to be a working clock on the web so this was a useful move. And the radio is now under the dash in my own self-made mounting bracket. The two switches, one is for the backup lights and one for the front-bumper mounted driving lights.
The front hood on this car never fit very well and always seemed to snag on the cowl. I decided that the only solutions to trim the back edge of the hood, make a new edge and then adjust the location to improve the fit.
It fits now and does not bang up the cowl.
Also, I did not like the position of the coil so I made some new mounts copied from another user on the Samba who was mounting an alternator
The driver's side door as a poor fit. I had modified the bottom to fit the sill but was never really happy with that. And I was not able to fit the bottom molding.
My plan now is to trim the bottom of the door door to fit then then modify the rocker so that I can get a better line. It means cutting the rocker outer skin off and making a new one.
For now the fit is a bit better, although I stilll have to do the rocker.
Finally, the motor is out, the carbs went to Tim at www.Volkzbitz.com
There still are lots of things to do and I am getting more and more into the re-restoration. I have different steering wheels, different wheels and maybe a different engine - wait, am I getting carried away?
Sigh. Merry Christmas everyone. Stay safe and healthy and avoid Omicron. I'll see you in the new year. I see that John is organizing another T3 invasion here on the west coast. This could be a goal for me.

I don't know if you're getting carried away or not. It might be more of a case of wanting to spend a little more time fixing things that bother you now, than they did during the first go round. If I remember right, your son needed a car, and this one was more complete than the other one that you spent way too much time on (weren't in a hurry due to all of the rust). Plus, after doing the 356, the 911, and the low light Ghia, you've got a better understanding of how these cars go together, their fit and finish, and how things work. I think you'll be OK, once you get your motivation back. Just messing with you Dave, I think you'll be fine, and the Invasion might be just the thing to light a fire under your butt. At least this one doesn't need the entire lower 6 inches of the body replaced, so that should save you some time. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hi Bob
I'm not really worried about getting carried away. The next major project is my 911 and I will need a car while it is in pieces. My original thought was to get the notch running and sell it. Now I'm thinking that I will keep it as my daily driver. And therefore, I want to go the extra steps to make it nice and, of course, reliable. And since I live in the Pacific north west where we get lots of rain I need to clean up the rusty bits so that they will not continue to eat away at the body. By the way, I just found, in the basement another set, no 3 sets of P and Cs, heads, a 2 litre T4 engine case and so I have some other engine options as well. You know, it is fun to work on these cars and come up with something that I will enjoy driving. Know what I mean?

Oh yea, I know exactly what you mean. When I built my 65 Notch, I built it for long distance cruising. It'll run out on the freeway at 75 mph all day long. I went with velour interior seating material, as I hate being stuck to vinyl in the summer months. I went with a 3.88 trans axle out of a 73 Super Beetle so the engine could be lazy on the highway, and I went with a new all aluminum case 1600, as a well built stock engine is good enough for me. I've gone all over with it too, which is why I went with my combo.
My son went with a 1700 Type 4 engine in his car, and really likes it. It didn't hurt that I bought some of the NLA bits when they were available for his conversion (like the cooling boot- 411-412 wagon only). In his case he went with a bus bar, that we hung off the IRS hangers kind of like Steve did with his Fastback. I also printed out Nate's template for modifying a stock t-3 cooling shroud to be used on a t-4 engine, as I didn't know which way I was going to go. I had originally planned to put a 2.0L T-4 engine into my 69 Squareback, only to sell that car back to the guy I bought it off of a couple of years later. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have spent some time thinking about the same problem. But, I was lucky to get a new one which wasn't cheep. They do appear every once in a while. Keep your eyes open.
The problem with taking it apart is, that the thing is basically riveted together and you will have to grind away some material which will be missing when you wan to put it back together. The part that comes loos is made of pot-metal and it will melt if you try to weld it back together. _________________ - Michael

This car didn't get the "full on" resto that his other 65 Notch got. That car got the entire bottom 6+ inches replaced. This one got a quick clean up for his son to use for college and work. Add in it was parked for a few years, and needed some work done on it, is why Dave is going thru it better this time. Well that, and he wants/needs a daily driver while he goes thru his Porsche (his current daily driver). Since he retired, he's been busy restoring old German cars. Some for himself, and some for others. He's been wanting to restore his daily driver Porsche for years, but just can't seem to get the "stars to align" for him to do so. So this car will become his daily while he finally gets to restore his Porsche (his baby). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hey I don't think the car is that bad.
Remember, beginning around 2003 it was driven by my son as a daily driver through sun and wind and rain and snow for a few years before parked. He even managed to blow up the lovely engine that I built for him.
And indeed there are things I would have differently many years ago had I known them. But my improved skills and problem solving will allow me to bring the car to be better than when I first finished it.
And Bob is right in saying that this will become my daily driver while I work on the 911. To that end I am working to improve things what need improvement while and making it an enjoyable daily driver.

I've been chipping away at a few things, like replacing the axle boots. No wonder there was so much dirt and grease under the car. They were both split.
And since this will become my daily driver I've decided to add a 4-way flasher/hazard light. This meant a new switch panel adding a switch and sorting the wiring. Done - so three switches on the new panel.
the red one being the hazard, the next the driving lights and the third the backup lights.

Hey Folks
Back in 2003 or so when I started on this journey Russ Wolfe once told me to never through away any parts. While I followed his advice I have so many boxes I'm not always sure what I have. Imagine my surprise when I found these
I must have found them before I finished this car for Matt. I will certainly use them now. They are beautiful and essentially nos.

Hey Guys
I'm looking for an article from 2005 on Tim Hesse's notch. I understand the car was featured in both Utra VW and hot VW's in the March 2005 editions. I tried to get a back issue but they're out of print. Does anyone have copy they might scan the article for me or let me buy the issue? I'm interested in his build and those wheels.
Thanks.

Can’t help you with the article but i think I remember that car.
Plaid interior, right?
One of the best for sure..
Wheels were American Racing Torq Thrust.
They still sell them new but you’re going to need to adapt to a ‘Murrican car bolt pattern.
There are also vintage versions in Porsche 5x130 but they are pricey pricey.
