Do you think the "top first" windshield install will work better for a hard top 74 Super? Awsome convertible BTW!

Yes, I actually got the tip in the Vanagon forum from a glass installer. VW's curved glass goes in more readily and with less chance of cracking by installing the top first.

My experience has shown this to be absolutely true. I've done this Bug windshield twice, both times trying the bottom first, (stupid I guess) both times i fought it for an hour ending up pulling it and doing the top first in a matter of minutes.

Oh, and thank you, it actually looks better in Photos! Smile

Dave

Thank you! For taking the time to share your know how and tips & tricks (and pics) of your build..It gives guys like me inspiration to get to the getting on our bugs!

Well....... After being run fairly consistently for a few weeks......... Problems creep up!
The photo is after multiple jaunts, I use the garage door opener and am rarely in the garage if the car is not. I just pulled farther forward this time.

Nothing major, I've glanced but haven't crawled under to locate the cause of this........ Sad I'm thinking cheap oil strainer gaskets...... . Ill need to stop by NAPA and get some of theirs for the next oil change...... I've got a fair pile of them from my FLAPS still left but if they are going to leak like this..........

I always apply grease to the gaskets before installing, helps prevent leaks.

The oil spills look to be more on the left side, so check the valve cover there (maybe oil visible on the heat exchanger)

Well, I've started a thread and thought I'd link to it.........

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559502

The seats in this car are original and UNCOMFORTABLE!

I've had Beetles for decades and never minded the seats...... I think I'm getting old........ Shocked

My wife agrees and she honestly doesn't want to go for rides it's so uncomfortable.
They have been recovered at some point by someone....... I'm not investing time or money in experimentation for improving the seats when I KNOW that there are comfortable seats to be easily obtained out of used cars.

I stumbled upon a Craig's List ad for 2001 Honda Civic EX that had a tree fall on the back of the car during Hurricane Sandy. He is parting it out and selling the seats.
I ended up purchasing them today as a Fathers Day Gift to myself.......... I'll document needed modifications in the above linked thread as I install them.........
I sat upon them supported by my bumper and I've got to say...... They ARE comfy! And for only $70 for the pair...... They are super comfy! Smile ........ PLUS I'VE GOT A CENTER ARM REST NOW!!!!! Dancing ..........

The seats hide the oil stains on the floor well too. Wink Looking forward to the new thread.

As noted earlier I had purchased this LED light strip for under dash courtesy lighting......... It works really well and a bonus is that it consumes very little electricity!
I was working on my seats last night until about 10pm, I went to bed......left the drivers door open, hence these lights on! I discovered this at 8 am....... Car started right up without hesitation! Oh happy me! Laughing

Well.......... Honda Seats are in! Smile ..............

There is however a major downside........ While the seats are amazingly comfortable, when you first sit down into the car...... It does NOT feel like a VW Beetle any more! Embarassed It is comfortable and supportive! Shocked
I'll get used to it I'm sure..........

Just returned from an ice cream run after the evening rains.........

Pulled the Bug in the garage and started looking for the oil leak.

Suspect #1 is the oil pressure sending unit............ At least I'm hoping for that and not a cracked oil gallery! Shocked ............

Well......... Have I yet said that I LOVE my car?

There is NOTHING like an air cooled convertible on a summer evening!
Fire flies twinkling, the sky ablaze with the colors of a hot days sunset, the wind in your hair, the chill of the evening air so you have heat levers on ........burning the skin off your left foot, and the friendly waves of passer byes!

Get out into the mountains or farm land and drive. Classic 60's / 70's music streaming via iPhone Bluetooth setting the mood........heavy sigh......... I love my car! Wink

Anyway........ I finally washed off the oily mess and found the main source of the oil leak, the oil pressure sender unit. Drip........drip.......drip as I drive along. I'll clean it again and replace with a new one tomorrow. Hopefully it's the unit and not a cracked threaded casting!

Probably time to drop the oil and adjust the valves as well. No working odometer so I operate on a gut feeling for routine maintenance frequency. Shocked

I should have taken some photos of the car against this evenings gorgeous Sunset........ But I didn't! Crying or Very sad

I attacked the oil sender leak yesterday. Had a new one in hand, put a socket on the old one and began to unscrew it..............

FINGER TIGHT!

I took it out and there was a clear oil drip path on the back side!

I cleaned it all up, put some teflon thread seal tape on and reinstalled it.

Now, I need to have a long talk with the guy who rebuilt my engine!!! Embarassed

Just retuned from chasing parts for my Vanagon on a foggy dreary day and am happy to report that the oil leak is gone!
Smile

Total cost....... Zero.......if I return the new sender unit.

Seeing as to how I now had a warm engine I figured it was a good time to change the engine oil.
Dropped the oil and before installation of the oil pan and oil screen I greased the paper gaskets as suggested by Mike.......... Now to See if I'm leak free after the next drive. Pray

Went out for Sunday Morning Bagels, took the Bug to warm it up and see if the leaks are fixed..........
Yep!

Dry as a bone!

The grease on the paper oil pan gaskets solved my seepage problems there! Smile

Thanks Mike!

Thanks! I fear I probably bore many though.....

Carfever, it looks fairly complete! Lets get going on it....... More photos, start a thread, tell us your plans and what you're doing.......

Mine was two years in the garage. If I had worked every day on it, it would have gone far quicker though.
Weeks would slip by without me even touching it....... Too cold......too hot.....too busy......discouraged by something.......etc.

I've found the LED Strip to be awesome! Plenty of light, even though it is aimed at the foot area it reflects up into your lap. I put in the rocker switch (repurposed rear defogger switch) for manual on control with the doors shut while driving.

My favorite by far is the "key in" power modification to the audio Bluetooth system.

Assume NOTHING about what the PO did as being OK!

I peeked under to check on my chronic oil leak and what should I see?
2 Axle bolts loose, held in only by the rubber boot!
The other four were loose!

Heavy sigh...... 10 minutes..... All fixed. Smile

If I recall correctly, teflon affects the ground of the sender so if the pressure does get too low, it won't actually turn on... I do know some guys at work used it on the mower sparkplugs, came to us when the stupid things would start backfiring and stumbling Rolling Eyes
