Do you think the "top first" windshield install will work better for a hard top 74 Super? Awsome convertible BTW! |
Yes, I actually got the tip in the Vanagon forum from a glass installer. VW's curved glass goes in more readily and with less chance of cracking by installing the top first.
My experience has shown this to be absolutely true. I've done this Bug windshield twice, both times trying the bottom first, (stupid I guess) both times i fought it for an hour ending up pulling it and doing the top first in a matter of minutes.
Oh, and thank you, it actually looks better in Photos!

I always apply grease to the gaskets before installing, helps prevent leaks. _________________ Mike

So, at the rear of the vent frame where the roll up window meets there is a razor sharp point. Actually painful if approached poorly!.........
Inside this point is a #1 Phillips screw surrounded by rotten rubber..........
Turns out there are rubber finish caps for these points available, I purchased mine from Chucks........
Take out the screw, drill a pilot hole in the proper location and install!.......

The oil spills look to be more on the left side, so check the valve cover there (maybe oil visible on the heat exchanger) |

Well, I've started a thread and thought I'd link to it.........
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559502
The seats in this car are original and UNCOMFORTABLE!
I've had Beetles for decades and never minded the seats...... I think I'm getting old........
My wife agrees and she honestly doesn't want to go for rides it's so uncomfortable.
They have been recovered at some point by someone....... I'm not investing time or money in experimentation for improving the seats when I KNOW that there are comfortable seats to be easily obtained out of used cars.
I stumbled upon a Craig's List ad for 2001 Honda Civic EX that had a tree fall on the back of the car during Hurricane Sandy. He is parting it out and selling the seats.
I ended up purchasing them today as a Fathers Day Gift to myself.......... I'll document needed modifications in the above linked thread as I install them.........
I sat upon them supported by my bumper and I've got to say...... They ARE comfy! And for only $70 for the pair...... They are super comfy! ........ PLUS I'VE GOT A CENTER ARM REST NOW!!!!! ..........

The seats hide the oil stains on the floor well too. Looking forward to the new thread. _________________ 1974 SB Vert - Getting there, slowly but surely |

Well......... Have I yet said that I LOVE my car?
There is NOTHING like an air cooled convertible on a summer evening!
Fire flies twinkling, the sky ablaze with the colors of a hot days sunset, the wind in your hair, the chill of the evening air so you have heat levers on ........burning the skin off your left foot, and the friendly waves of passer byes!
Get out into the mountains or farm land and drive. Classic 60's / 70's music streaming via iPhone Bluetooth setting the mood........heavy sigh......... I love my car!
Anyway........ I finally washed off the oily mess and found the main source of the oil leak, the oil pressure sender unit. Drip........drip.......drip as I drive along. I'll clean it again and replace with a new one tomorrow. Hopefully it's the unit and not a cracked threaded casting!
Probably time to drop the oil and adjust the valves as well. No working odometer so I operate on a gut feeling for routine maintenance frequency.
I should have taken some photos of the car against this evenings gorgeous Sunset........ But I didn't!

Thank you for all the time you put into these updates. I am also working on a 74 super conv. I like the led lights. Great idea. _________________ 74 Thing (wifes)

Thanks! I fear I probably bore many though.....
Carfever, it looks fairly complete! Lets get going on it....... More photos, start a thread, tell us your plans and what you're doing.......
Mine was two years in the garage. If I had worked every day on it, it would have gone far quicker though.
Weeks would slip by without me even touching it....... Too cold......too hot.....too busy......discouraged by something.......etc.
I've found the LED Strip to be awesome! Plenty of light, even though it is aimed at the foot area it reflects up into your lap. I put in the rocker switch (repurposed rear defogger switch) for manual on control with the doors shut while driving.
My favorite by far is the "key in" power modification to the audio Bluetooth system.

I cleaned it all up, put some teflon thread seal tape on and reinstalled it.

If I recall correctly, teflon affects the ground of the sender so if the pressure does get too low, it won't actually turn on... I do know some guys at work used it on the mower sparkplugs, came to us when the stupid things would start backfiring and stumbling _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12
