My current 71 is my 3rd Super. It was too cheap to pass up. $300. Hadn't run in like 20 years, but was complete, and one of the more solid cars I've ever seen on the east coast for the money. I figured, for $300 I can customize it, make it my own, in anyway I want, and not feel guilty that I've customized a car that may be rare or really valuable one day. 71 has the classic flat windshield, the better handling of strut front suspension, and the benefit of a better geared trans then an early 60's swing axle. Parts have been easy to come by, and relatively cheap considering what some Ghia, early Beetle, and Bus parts have become lately. There are even quite a few genuine VW parts still available for it. Autozone carries a good selection of tune up parts that are actually in stock. My Autozone even had a starter on the shelf. So when it's done, I can actually drive it, just like I did with my other 2 Supers, and not worry that if something breaks it'll be weeks of waiting on UPS to deliver the parts.
Would I rather have a 61? Sure. But my 71 Super is still fun. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I'm curious in that most don't feel that Supers are valuable b/c they are Supers. Is it b/c they are Supers or b/c they are 70's cars? Many claim a lack of desire for Supers but there also seems to be a lack of desire for 70's standards, so is the lack of desire for Supers b/c they are Supers, or b/c they are 70's cars?
I think at some point the value of Supers will increase. Granted not to the level of a beetle built in the 60's, which by the way are less desirable than a Beetle built in the 50's. I have 3 Beetles. 78 vert, 74 Super, 61 ragtop. Once all 3 are done the 61 ragtop will be my prize beetle b/c it is the oldest and most simplistic which seems to add to the value. I personally prefer pre 66 beetles. I like the lowback seats, big headlites, and overrider bumpers, but I still have a blast driving either of my Supers and isn't that what it's all about? |

I know this is an old thread, but I couldn't resist bumping it.
Funny how "different people like different things"!
I like the 1973/74 Super Beetle specifically because of all the modifications and changes that went into that model (curved windshield, little bit of dash, bigger engine).
In my opinion, it's the prettiest model of them all!
Plus, i really liked the 70s. |

Nothing wrong with that. We all have a favorite time period.
Don't let others sway you into thinking a Super or a 70's bug is a waste. |
