Evening everyone... Here is my problem.
I got home from being gone for a few days, jump in the Westy at the airport and start to head home. As I pull out of the parking lot and give it gas it seems to sputter, so I back off the gas and check it again. It sputters almost to the point where it is going to stall.
I pull over to the side of the road and take it out of gear (sputtering happens in all gears) and I am able to rev it up to 5500 RPM without any kind of hesitation at all, yet when I put it back into gear I run into issues when I am pulling any kind of load at all.
I can hear the fuel pump running, seems to be louder than normal.
Fuel Filter Clogged, Fuel Pump going south?
No issues with shifting at all, smooth in and out of gear, not hanging up at all.
Thoughts?? Comments?? Suggestions??
I have tomorrow off to throw at it... But it is currently my daily driver and I need get it running, not to mention heading to Pullman, WA for some football this weekend! _________________ SF

Hook up your computer
See what it tells you.
If nothing then:
Say 3 Hail Marys.
Go to sleep.
Call Bostig in the morning.
(Or email them now to get in the queue.)
If you can not sleep, go to a Ford forum as I doudt there are any real experts here. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

The noisy fuel pump may indicate a clogged filter causing cavitation. How many miles on the filter? If your diagnostics don't show any faults then a fuel filter is a cheap, easy place to start. _________________ 85 Westy w/ 2.2L Subaru

Fuel Filter Clogged, Fuel Pump going south?! |
Sorry, really,
The first thing is to read the current draw of the pump.
As they get old they draw more current.
Eventually the just can not keep up.
Then:
Clamp the feed to the filter and pump.
Remove the filter.
Dump it out into a glass and filter it.
You may have a couple of things.
Bad gas, water or a rusty tank.
If it is any of these you are going to have to deal with it.
That means empty the tank, at least.
Good luck _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Thanks for the leads... Tomorrow I will tackle the filter issue first thing(spare one in the rear cabinet already) along with checking to see what is coming from the tank and then check the output of the pump.
Updates tomorrow. _________________ SF

I'd put my money on a fuel tank, filter, or pump issue. I thought I had a pump problem, until I replace it, and the filter. In the end, it was the tank that kept dumping rust funk into the lines and clogging the filter. I would get crazy bucking when under load.
Keep us posted! _________________ 1989 Bostig Syncro Westy |
