The factory had seat heaters too.
I noticed that all the parts for the VW system are sort of the same.
I noticed that most of the aftermarket stuff you showed looks a lot like the VW stuff.
Coincidence?
I located most of my heated seat stuff out of other VWs.
Just not the pads, yet. I have Recaro seats I want to put in and I can buy VW heated inserts from VW, but at a prcie. Factory pads for the factory seats may or may not still be available.
NOTE: Vanagons in Canada could have a heated driver seat. The control is hard and expensive to find. Plus it was for one seat only. You can make a later controller work just fine.
FYI: The heated VW heated seat parts are hard to find, but do integrate nicely, into the van.
EDIT: This is a LOW priority thing for me since we live in San Diego; who needs that, right? But, it is a nice thing to have, you just have to work at it for the once a year or so we actually might want it. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I don't see VW listed on the Check site. Do you remember what the kit ran you and did you get the DIY? Thanks again. Pre Heating the bed sounds like I'll make it on the wifes good side with this mod |

I installed the heatedseatkits set in my Subaru under leather, worked great, install is a breeze, they provide very nice wiring harnesses, all modular with plugs, all you do is provide +12v and a ground, and find a place to mount the switches.
Take the opportunity to machine wash or dry-clean your upholstery while it's off. _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

I have installed carbon fiber heating elements to my stock Vanagon seats.
I wired them to the relay and control unit found in Canadian Syncros and Tristars.
Worked like a charm.
Really makes winter driving comfortable. |

I just scored the stock top plastic part that holds the seat/heater switch. (only a buck fifty) you got to love the wrecking yard!!
Post pics on the way you go! I have a set of eurovan seats waiting to go in after a good wash and heaters.

So those heating elements have a thermistor that works with the "relays?"
Which brand and model of element did you use? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I "discovered" our new Jetta V has heated seats. I never looked close before. The other day I drove it and it got cool in the evening. While playing with the controls (worse than a Vanagon!) I found the push button control in the middle of the hot / cold (left) and the vent control (right.) I noticed I only need two positions. Warm and Hot (and Off.)
I mention this as I may not really need to integrate the variable factory system which uses a thermistor to keep temperature at what you set via the (EXPENSIVE) controller.
In other words an after market setup may well be all I really need. (I won't use it a whole lot here in So Cal anyways.)
Any input? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Yes and well above most budgets around here.

The VW factory elements for my Recaros are about $90 each which is not too bad, I think compared to what the aftermarket ones cost. I can get the factory ones wholesale in the US last time I checked.
But, the control and "relays" are quite expensive to purchase new, but thankfully you can get them out of other model VWs used. Not like they are falling off trees, but you can get them.
Knowing myself I just put them on high or low. The variable feature of the stock VW is sort of lost on me.
BUT, I do have everything to do the job now and forgot to order the pads until this thread came up. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

At this point, I believe I have all components to install the heated seat/seats in my 1986 Westfalia. I have the VW rheostat, raised upper column cover in brown, #59 heated seat relay. I believe all I need now are the heated pad elements and the wiring harness. Does anybody know where I can find these or the VW part numbers? I've been told that the heated seat wiring harness from an early 90's Jetta MK is the same...can anybody here verify that? If I should find the wiring harness, but not the heated pads, does anybody here know if aftermarket heated pads will work? I will appreciate any information and help! |

Digging through the archives, I saw this conversation you had with 'insyncro' about seat heaters.
I'm about to re-assemble my driver's seat after a rebuild and cleaning, and have a complete OEM heated seat setup (rheostat, column shroud, harness, '59' controller. I bought aftermarket heating elements.
According to Bentley, there's a temp sensor in the OEM seat element that plugs into the 6-pin under seat connector. The aftermarket elements I have only have power and ground leads.
Did you figure out whether you needed thermistor-controlled heating elements to use the VW harness? I couldn't determine whether the temp sensor is needed from Insyncro's comments.
Thanks for any guidance, and Happy Holidays.

Seat heaters are on my list. On the Westy, both seats rotate. So what is the best way to keep from damaging the wiring leads when turning the seats?
Cheers,

I have swivels, heaters and Recaro seats waiting to be installed.
I am thinking of putting a hole in the middle of the swivels to allow the cable to go through, if it is possible.
Otherwise you need a long enough service loop and the cable tied away so it does not get caught. In this case, I do not know what a good routing is.
This is a topic I sort of forgot about.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I am doing this soon, and was going to drill a hole in the center of the swivel with a grommet on each piece of metal it goes through. Not sure how many pieces we have to go through yet or if the middle is an option at all. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!
