Fuel gauge issue..am I pulling the motor?

My fuel gauge quit, and it will read full if grounded out, and the black wire in is hot, so......
am I pulling the motor to get to the sender?
-Is there anyway to check continuity of the brown wire via chassis ground to verify that it's not just a faulty ground wire from the gauge to the back?

The brown gauge wire comes out from under the tank panel just infront of the voltage regulator on a 71, ground that and see what the gauge does.
