Yep! I was told I need to shave (cut some rubber off) the inside part of the rubber. The ones I have were intended for early early cars without the rubber on the dome light pin. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

So just take the rubbers off the dome light pins. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

So like a bad son, I missed Ruby Red's 50th Birthday. I tried to make it up by taking it for a Thanksgiving drive but it refused to start. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

So over the course of 10 yrs while I've finished the forever restoration of my '65 sunroof Variant, I ran into a few embarrassing moments, where the car just turned off and wouldn't crank, start or would lose all electrical power. It was frustrating as EVERYTHING was replaced with NOS parts. Well, to make a long story short, I didn't drive it for the most part of 2020 due to Covid precautions, as there was nowhere I wanted to go. Fast forward to 2021, I started moving it around and taking short drives. On one hot summer day It started sputtering and misfiring. I knew there was some type of dirt or fuel starvation of some sort.
I decided to take it for a spin, to clear out the fuel system, well it got vapor lock and it turned off, right in the middle of an intersection. I turned the key to restart and nothing, no crank, no juice. I get out to push the car, when I hear a siren behind me and a female voice telling me to get back in my car, that she would push me. I turned around to stop her, as I didn't want a police push bar denting my bumper, but it was a tall beautiful officer from South Pasadena PD who pushed me and my car out of harm's way (Thanks Officer Ropopo). I thought the car would start after cooling off and checking all connectors, and it didn't. Had to do the AAA tow of shame.
I decided to call Stuart, who had helped me two years ago to trace a bad ground that impeded starting, he came to my house and after helping sort out the dirt in the fuel problem, we tried starting the car, but it would turn off, we messed with the wires, and it would turn on and off. He started tracing every single connection from the ignition switch, to the battery and coil. well, it turns out, that my NOS fuse box, had a defective or corroded solder in the terminal junction, so there was my 10 yrs old gremlin. The solder had come apart and it would lose power to the ignition. Being the hoarder that I am, we decided to go with a VGC used one I had. He replaced it, put all new fuses and vroooom!
Car is again turnkey and very smooth, he did tell me I have an exhaust leak and my car could be quieter. Lesson learned? NOS doesn't mean perfect. It may and will fail.

ugh - so frustrating. my 65 squareback would do similar, I could start it up every day no issue. if it had run more than a minute, I could not get it restarted for hours if I shut it off. No crank no click no nothing. I had to park on a hill or even just backwards in my own apartment carport and try to push it fast enough for a push start
It was a bad trans ground strap. It took me 2 new accelerator cables to figure that one out and most people will scratch their head wondering how an accelerator cable could possibly be related _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Tram thought my plugged up stock exhaust w/Harley mufflers was causing my square to bog down.
It was plugged, but turned out to need a different ECU to actually cure the problem.
He resealed my engine/transmission/put in a new turn signal switch/installed my NOS passenger mirror etc! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

If it's a mechanical or electrical part - I've had worse luck with NOS parts than new parts over the years.
Is this, by chance, the same Stuart that worked at Bill and Steve's back in the 80's? |
