I'm going to to pick it up Saturday. He think it will get me home. Santa Fe to Denver. Slightly worried about the ride back, but we'll see.
Plans: I have always like the OEM plus look(just a hair or so past stock). Probably lowering it a tad. Add some cool, but stock VW wheels. Interior back to stock from dry-rotted cloth to tan or black basket weave. _________________ 69 Square |

Just saw it for the first time. It's truly an amazing car. 50k original is true. The car is original except for the cloth seats(didn't think that was an option in '69)
Has retraceable seat belts(not original)?
There are only a few things it needs. A boot just inside the rear hatch, oil filler neck? It also need a driverside rear plastic piece that cover the rear hatch support, up by the head liner. Rear bumper has a few beauty marks/dents.
It has been converted from FI with the mini Webers.
The pans are perfect and original. My magnet stuck to every singe inch of the body. It does look like it got a rattle can tan paint job over it's original tan color. Not sure why, but whatever. _________________ 69 Square |

That boot your talking about, if it's a big one in the middle it's the bellows, if it's to the right of the bellows where the dipstick goes its the dipstick tube seal. I wouldn't drive it unless both of those are installed and intact. |
Thanks, the boot is there, it's just torn and has some electrical tape around it. This is my first Type 3 so I have never seen one before I assume it connects the filler neck and another piece that connects to the block. I'll get a better look tomorrow. _________________ 69 Square |

There is only one hill between Santa Fe and Denver.
I'm buying it from what appears to be the only VW guy in Santa Fe. He may have an extra. If not I'll check for cooked oil on the muffler. _________________ 69 Square |

I bought it $4500. I think the carbs need adjusting. It stalled on me a few times when I gave it gas at some stop lights.
I did find a few rust spots. Nothing too major though. Front bumper mounts inside the spare tire holding area. Just inside the passenger fender top...as you look into the fender when the door is open.
more pictures: sorry only have cell phone camera so they are linked to my FaceBook.

Maybe I should sell this thing. The engine block number is U0187187. A 187 is the radio number for the crime of murder.
Well atleast it matches up with the 369079XXX VIN - Oct 1968, Motor - Dec 1968. _________________ 69 Square |

A little update(it's been a week now...I'm willing to talk about it)
6:00am: We got about 30 miles outside Santa Fe on our way back to Denver before we had trouble. I started hearing a valve ping or piston slap. Along with that the engine got louder and I lost a ton of power. We quickly pulled over. A quick inspection showed nothing out of the ordinary externally. The engine would crank, but only started a few times, when it did it would only run for a moment or two.
We pulled out the tow strap and slowly towed it off to the next exit. Keeping in mind it's an auto we didn't want to tow it to far, or too fast.
We parked it in a safe place and headed back to Denver to get the trailer. Yes, the trailer my wife told me I should have brought down with me in the first place... She was with me. As we passed other cars on trailers she would say "That's a good idea"
11:30am: back to Denver
12:30pm: Headed back to Santa Fe. We chatted with the previous owner via the phone. He seems to think I may have busted a valve spring. It's a motor I have no experience with so I didn't have any idea.
5:30pm: Square starts and drives onto trailer. Still definite loss in power, but running. Loaded and headed to Denver
12:30am: back in Denver. Square starts, reverse off trailer and into garage
1:00am: trailer back
1:30am: bed _________________ 69 Square |

I thought so too, but the oil boot was duct taped(previous owner) and no sign of leaks. The bellow was there but torn slightly on the bottom by the muffler. I just replaced both of those today with ISP units.
Could the torn bellow have caused an over heat at highway speeds? I drove it around Santa Fe for about 30 minutes before purchasing.

work done to day.
new bellow from ISP
new oil boot from ISP
I don't think that wire is getting grounded very well. I assume it was the stock position. The plastic cover I took off was OEM and discolored under the connector.
new lift gate covers from ISP...with the 70 Ghia in the background.
