does anyone know where to purchase 25/36hp main bearings that have the extra thickness on the #1 bearing for a thrust cut case?

now for a real snipe hunt: does anyone know where to purchase 25/36hp main bearings that are for an align bored case (any size) AND a thrust cut case?


people say they are available, yet i have yet to see a pic of a set, to find a part number or a listing of a set, or to hold a set of said bearings in my hands.
i don't think these bearings exist. prove me wrong.

I know they exist as I had them in my greasy hands to install them in my thrust cut 20 over case standard crank 36 HP engine. Cool I just might have another set Wink it'll cost to prove you wrong but worth it Twisted Evil

Std case bore with over sized thrust don't and have never existed (if that's what size you were asking about?). The reason is that if your thrust bearing is loose enough to pound out the flange area there is a 100% chance you need a case bore as well. True for 25-36hp as well as 40hp-1600. What is available right now is the red box Argentina 25-36hp main bearing sets (aluminum backed #2 main) in .020 oversize bore on the case, std, .010, and .020 under on the crank. The only oversize thrust available right now is .020 case, .020 crank (I don't know why). The thrust is .040 oversize. I have all the mentioned sizes in stock. I lookout for main bearing sets all the time and I buy them when I do see them (except for the .030/.040 under sets which everyone seems to have at least one set of). The supply is better than maybe three or four years ago but still a little sketchy.

111 198 451B is the number I have for- 50 case, standard crank, cut thrust. I have more sets but cleaned up and put the boxes in a safe place Wink

I've seen later cases thrust cut for a shim to use with standard thrust bearings. I don't know if they used only one size of shim, or if shims can be custom made for each cut. I know Rimco used to make custom sized barrel shims for just about anything, perhaps they could source a 36hp case shim, or make one for you.

The old time machine shop in one town I lived in used to make all kinds of shims for the cut cases back in the days. Motorcycle piston rings also worked Wink
So was the original question standard size bearing with the thrust cut?

The shims were just a std thickness of .015 (the ones we used to buy). You would then use a std thrust bearing after you cut the case to true up the thrust surface. They were a split shim that got installed on the bearing. Some people used them when the thrust surface was cut beyond the maximum thrust cut (2.00mm) Crying or Very sad. An engine I cored out one time had three of those shims stacked behind the thrust (yow!).

I think the question was standard bore case, OS thrust. Is that right?

the question was for any 25/36hp size case, be it at standard, .25mm, .50mm, .75mm
the reason i asked about possible standard bore/thrust cut, is because sometimes it is worthwhile to have the case planed and the bore cut back to standard.

Matt, how is the quality of these argentinian bearings? i did not see a price or listing for them on your website.
i am really not super thrilled about the 20/20 case/crank sizing though, as i really don't like using cranks past the first cut, especially 36hp cranks.

Quality is alright on the bearing sets, Jon. I just advertise the standard case size sets on the bugparts.com site, and a request current stock popup on the aircooled research site. The availability on the oversize bearings is still spotty. I feel the same way about anything bigger than a .010 under 36hp crank but I do have a couple .020 under cranks running right now in beetles that have got some pretty good miles on them....no problems. Last years Bonneville engine ran a .020 grind crank and came back in one piece after some serious abuse. That crank is now running in my daily driver beetle. Now if it was a bus engine that's a different story........

The shims were available through Metric man, if anybody remembers them. Their salesman would show up about every 4 or 5 weeks for a hardware order of aircooled stuff. We never asked for anything for 36hp because at the time I had not built a 36hp in about 8 years for anyone (late 80s through mid 90s). Metric man has been gone for at least 12 years.

Cant you take a standard bearing and machine to fit? You might get a better fit.

Any updates to the availability of thrust cut 36hp mains? specifically i am looking for a set of: 20 case / standard crank/ thrust cut case, although i might be able to work in different parameters depending on what is available.

Same bearings are available now as a year ago, nothing has changed. In the oversize thrust bearing sets all that remains available is .020", .030", and .040" ID with the .020" OD. I'm looking for a set of .020" OD .010" ID oversize thrust for a customer job at the moment if any one has a set.

an old thread... but...

I just opened up a case and the thrust seems perfect. bearings have no stamps on them whatsoever... so does this mean they are stock and I am very lucky to have a good case?

oversize bearings would be stamped right?

Some bearings are stamped in ink, which can disappear over time. You gotta measure them. Confused
