Hey guys.
My dad came across this beetle a few years ago in a garage of a woman he was doing some work for. She bought it in Germany, eventually had it brought to Alberta, Canada, and from there she towed it to Newfoundland on a trailer.
Jump to now, he traded a truck for the beetle. The car is a surprise for my gf when we go home Christmas (he surprised me with a bay window bus in a similar manner).
From what I have gathered from him, it is a 1972, making it a 1302. I am new to beetle stuff. Wondering if you guys could give me more info based on what you can see in the pics. Obviously some stuff has been done to it, aftermarket wheels, interior, etc, and I believe an engine has been swapped in from a bus.
Here is how we found it:
Some pics of it at our place:
A lot of plans for this car, would like to restore it as much as possible to original specs, but have a lot of learning to do about what is what with these cars. So whatever you can tell me about this vs an original 1302 is greatly appreciated.
P.S. A pic of my bus:

Looks to have drums on the front which means it's a 1302 not a 1302S.
So it would have had a 1300 twin port engine and low back seats originally.
Bumpers aren't original but all the "Euro" spec things different to North American models are fairly obvious.
Earlier tail lights and front turn signals, clip together 3 screw style headlights with internal parker lights, non padded dash, 145 KM/h speedo (1600 had 160km/h) and non vented front apron.
Same as what we got here in Australia. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Engine looks like it was a fuel injected block, no pump location. The pump looks like a injection pump which would be way too much pressure for a carburator. You might want to see if you can test what it is putting out. You need the rear tin in engine compartment to stop hot air from coming off exhaust and heating up motor. |

Looks like a nice starting point. What part of NL are you from? I am from there originally too. The west coast. I am currently in Ontario. |

Thanks guys. So do the exterior parts (bumpers, lights, fenders, etc.) seem like what would be on it originally?
justaguy: I am from St. Mary's Bay, way down on the Avalon peninsula, about an hour from St. John's. Now in Oshawa, ON for school so I dont get to check out the car until Christmas. _________________ 1984 VW Rabbit GTI

Read previous posts. Bumpers and lights are mentioned. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle - Daily Driver

I read previous posts, I am just not sure about Joels post. He mentions bumpers arent original but alludes to differences in euro models. Would these bumpers have come on the car as it came from Germany, or have they been swapped out?
Then he says earlier tails and turns but mentions same as they got in Australia.... so does that mean they belong with this German car or were changed out?
Sorry, I have spent the last few years learning about baywindow buses, after coming from an 84 GTI, so this is all new to me. Seems to be tons of differences within the beetles and just trying to get it all straight. _________________ 1984 VW Rabbit GTI

Sorry if my post wasn't real clear but what I was trying to say was the bumpers definitely aren't original.
The only 70s bugs that had the old 6 volt smoothie bumpers like that was the euro 1200 standard beetle base model and even those stopped having them in about 74-75.
But all the rest of the trim is stock for a euro 1302 like headlights, taillights, turn signals etc, its just had the body chrome strips shaved off to cal-look it abit at some point _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Thanks for the info Joel. We will be putting the bumpers back to stock, and replacing the chrome trim, along with the other painted chrome bits.
The goal is to restore the car for this summer.
Got some hardcover manuals with it, the original manual and dealership locations, and birth certificate.
Birth certificate from Germany:
Roughtly says:
Dear Ms. Benoit
We thank you for your letter. With interest we have noted that you are still in possession of an old Volkswagen and we are happy to let you know the data of your vehicle:
chassis number 112 2 473 046
model 113 VW Sedan
engine number DO 886 492
produced on 24/01/72
delivered at 26/01/72
delivered to Freiburg, Germany
color L20B Orange
interior decoration
Found some German coins inside:
Chrome trim came with it, along with some misc parts and a rear valence:
Rubber seal:
Drivers door was broken at some point and they got two new ones, only installed one so here is the other, with trim:
We kept the car a secret from my girlfriend Deidre until Christmas. When I got home I wanted to clean it up a little before she got it.
Front before:
During:
After:
Fender cleaning:
Rear before:
After:
All done:
Got some bows for the big reveal:
Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet:
Put the car up on a trailer so we could bring it down by the house for Dad to surprise Deidre:

Looks like a great start Chris!
You may know me from back in the day. Redinteg, or later on as Mango. I now have a 1972 Super Beetle myself. My goal for this yr to to get the mechanical as good as possible for now, with some minor cosmetics. And then carry on from there. You know how it goes. Maybe we`ll cross paths sometime this summer! I included a pic of mine below.

Hi, the birth certificate says that she originally had a "D" engine which is a 1200 ccm 40bhp (34 DIN hp) single port engine. This explains the strange speedometer with smaller letters (post 8/71) but 140 km/h scale, which after 8/71 normally was installed only in the German 1200 with 6 Volts after 8/71 (12 Volts German 1200s after 8/71 had the 160 km/h scale, donīt ask why). 1302s with the small engine were rare in Germany, but they also usually had an engine decklid without vents. So these thngs were already changed on your bug. The bumpers are not original, as Joel wrote. Have fun with her! |

Ryan, wow who would have guessed Id run into you here. Beautiful Beetle. I am hoping Miss Scarlet will make it to Dub Show 2012, hopefully yours will be there too?
Yes that is my bus, Colonel Mustard, with its new friend Miss Scarlet (bit of a theme lol).
Alex, thanks for the info, so many little changes with the beetles its hard to keep track. Ill have tons of questions as the build goes on, as I am new to the beetle world. _________________ 1984 VW Rabbit GTI

I was only home for Christmas, and left again for a semester of school. I wanted to get some tear down completed before I leaft so the car is ready to go out for paint in a few months.
Took the carpet out of the trunk:
Door panels removed:
Interior before:
Seats out, not sure what they would have come out of, but not original obviously:
Awesome carpet gone:
EMPI shifter:
Belts gone:
Rear seat, which is in pretty good shape, out:
Worst rust spot under the rear seat:
Everything cleared out:
Removed some exterior trim:
Bagged all the parts:
Empty beetle:

Wow a 1200 super 1302A, as Alex said they are pretty rare.
Low back seats are original for 1200 and 1300 supers. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?
