My '77 Westy has a bad cold idle, so I took out the AAR to test and adjust if necessary. I found that at ambient temps, I could blow through it but with about the same pressure as blowing up a balloon. After 30 mins in the freezer, it was the same or worse! I gave it a good cleaning inside and out with carb cleaner, which seems to have loosened it up, and I'm able to pry the aperture open - the problem is that when I tighten the adjustment nut and remove the prying device (a nail), the disc just springs shut again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks!

Apparently the stud the nut is on is moving when you tighten the nut or you are not moving the stud. No amount of prying the aperature open will change the setting, you have to rotate the stud until the aperture opens naturally without help and tighten the nut to keep it there.

Damn, that sucks. Short of getting some JB weld in there for a short term fix it sounds like you need another AAR.

Live and learn, I suppose. I suspect something wasn't quite right with it to begin with, as the aperture didn't really open much at all (not enough to let any light through) by moving the stud from right to left within its little slot. Thanks for the help anyways though. Hopefully the replacement AAR doesn't require much adjustment.
