So the point of this thread is to get karma by giving things away that you don't need. Generally van related or connected.
Karma idea:
*You may NOT receive an item and then sell it. Use it, give it back, or karma it again. Don't be that guy.
**You may NOT request any items. Either it comes up or it doesn't.
***Post your location, first come, first serve. |
Interesting idea. |
I also like the idea, but only if we implement the 2nd rule, **You may NOT request any items. Either it comes up or it doesn't. Otherwise, I see that as turning into nothing more than a WTB ad in the classifieds section, which ruins the whole point of such a thread in my opinion. |
X2 no begging. |

... Otherwise, how could you find what you need in a thread that might have grown to 30 pages or more? |
Gary - where there is a will Mooches always find a way. The fact this thread is here is proof. We are so lucky to have a guy like Everett who offers the services he does without charging us and now we want more bandwidth? I have thrown away so many parts WHERE THEY WERE ADVERTISED HERE FOR FREE and some Mooch sent me an e-mail or PM that said "does that 'free' include the shipping to me cause I'll take it if it does, otherwise I don't want it" OR my favorite "I'll split the shipping on that part with you. What is wrong with it? I am looking for a new one. Do you have it for free instead of a used one - just asking in case you do?" It is the same reason the ACVW wrecking yards crushed all their ACVW's. They got tired of haggling for $2 on a part that cost $80 in labor to remove. I know that for a fact as one of the owners of a yard here that closed told me that was his logic. One day he just said "I am done with these freeloaders. It costs me more to sell these parts than scrap them." _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Great idea. A home brewing forum I'm on does this every year around the holidays. Here's the 2009 thread. There's a list of general rules in the first post that would be good guidelines to follow. Maybe make a new thread called "Bay Window Part it Forward" and drop these rules in?
Going to dig through my stash and see what I have to offer. |
I think we should all donate at least $20 each to TheSamba to show our thanks for having such a thread. Afterall the Classifieds are free. The forum is free. Since we will be getting free parts a donation should be mandatory to participate, don't ya think? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Hey Steve,
Your post reminded me of this. Someone had a pretty nice couch they were giving away for free so they put it out front with a "free" sign on it. Nobody would even stop to look at it. The next day they put a different sign on. "$50" The couch was gone by the end of the day.
As to donations... I sold the yellow bus here and did send a modest donation. I was also sent back a very nice "thank you". _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I think that should be up to the individual. Pretty much all hobbyist forums imply that if you appreciate the services provided, please make a donation or buy a subscription. _________________ Visit the Vintage Volkswagen Parts & Tech Wiki today!

Regarding thread name - A rename of "Pay it forward" would be easily memorable.

Let me goose that name a bit: "Bay it forward" |

WestyMan1971 made a good point in that this thread includes a fair bit of discussion. Maybe the mods can clean up the discussion, keep the actual parts listings, and someone declare a new "go live" post. Then we're off to the races. _________________ *****************

Also, could we edit the first post to include some general guidelines? _________________ Visit the Vintage Volkswagen Parts & Tech Wiki today!

Sorry, I meant to give you credit for the above observation. WestyMan1971, not 71whitewesty. Good point that you made. _________________ *****************

Have an unopened set of Gabriel Hijackers (#49215).
Swap for a new glass pack muffler (muffler only) that will mate to a T4 Thunderbird extractor (large 3-bolt flange). Example below:

the rules you set sound perfect & clear to me
Quote: |
General Rules:
-1 item per person, unless an item is unclaimed for a long period of time. Also, the donator gets to decide if all items go together to one person, or to separate the items.
-No requests.
-Once an item is claimed, edit your post with "Gone- to busdaddy (or whoever took the item!)
-If an item is large, the donator can ask the recipient to pay shipping. Otherwise, the item is free.
-No "reneges". If you post something up as a free item, don't "ebay" it off after. That goes against the spirit of this thread. If you don't want to participate, that's fine! But don't offer up an item and then change your mind, or you will be banned from receiving.
|
id also like to see this as sticky
otherwise it could be forgotton if we go without a doner

I need rear brake drums for a 1970 bus and a left rear backing plate. I also need a wiper motor for the same vehicle. |
I understand that offering stuff is the idea here.
...but maybe you could start a thread called " hey I need some free stuff..."

True. I suppose if you needed something really bad you can add it to your signature, there's nothing about that in the rules. I see it pretty often as I'm browsing the forums. _________________ -Tony

All I can offer is the gaping void in my detached garage where an early bay camper would fit nicely. Is there any karma for that? _________________ "Want a little peace of mind, grab the lowest branch and start to climb"
