I will also source the '92-'94 legacy turbo water pump to gain some ground clearance when I put in a final parts order for whatever I overlooked.

I don't have the space or time but I am doing it anyways Laughing
After having a test drive in the buslab mule and feeling the gobs of torque I had to have one for myself. Cool

I received the wrong main bearings again but the 11mm oil pump looks good. Part number 15010AA360, it is a late model STI pump.

I will have to cut off the lowest tab(between the protrusions at the bottom) since it serves no purpose for me and more importantly it will interfere with my burley oilpan that has the dipstick outlet relocated there. Burley offered that it might be a issue when I mentioned using a different pump. Idea

The builder shop that I got the pump from steered me away from the 12mm pump saying that I wouldn't benefit from it since I am not running the motor boosted and can keep the revs in check. The 12mm pump puts out way more pressure at 6K but the 11mm pump puts out more flow. Think

I finally got the correct main bearings and now found out that they sent me the incorrect rod bearings- delays. Rolling Eyes

I got a different water pump for my other syncro that FrankenSubySyncro mentioned on another thread, it is from a '93 turbo legacy AISIN Part # WPF008.

The pump outlet faces rearward rather than down making the pump shorter. This is important for someone running the Tom Shiels t-stat housing adapter on a syncro as the adapter adds overall length to the water pump(without the adapter it is a non-issue) and severe mods need to be make to the skid plate as you can see here-

Since the pump was a extra outlet the adapter looks like it can be eliminated. The water outlet bolts are in a different position so that it is indexed incorrectly but I am sure the right one can be sourced.
Just a FYI unless someone knows a problem with this or a better solution. Idea

Yes, that is what i was trying to write last night but it wasn't very clear. The water pump will replace the adapter as well as giving more ground clearance. Just gotta find the water outlet cap that is indexed correctly and is somewhat flat, some of the ones that i have seen pictures of are angled. Maybe the SVX one will work thanks.

According to a website post and pictures that i found the center timing belt covers are all the same 2.2, 2.5 or turbo. I believe the post since i bought a new late model 2.5 timing belt cover and laid it over my early 2.2 cover and they are identical. I will verify once i am finally able to build this motor. There is a bump out in the timing cover at the water pump that looks perfect but it is theory phase unless someone can verify it works but it looks like it will.

The problem with getting the bearings for my motor stems around '99 being a transition year. If there are 4 bolts holding to the tranny is phase 1 and if it has 6 bolts to the tranny it is phase 2. The different phase motors have the thrust bearings in different positions and the rod bearings are different as well.

All the middle timing belt covers are the same on EJ22, EJ25, EJ22T, etc.

I got the correct rod bearings and verified that they fit and plastiguaged them for tolerances but the build has been put off for a minute. I have to have the truck ready to go on a 2 week trip in 3 weeks so it will be built soon.

I found a crusty brake line that failed when i poked it so I had to get some off a donor but the tranny had to come out. The gas tank straps needed to be replaced but the mounts were rusty so the gas tank had to come out for welding. The sender is getting replaced and the correct 30r9 fuel lines are on order(the syncro hoses still look good but old). PS lines will be replaced with soft lines. There are several other parts that have been installed.
So long story short, i have had delays

I'm also working on a frankenmotor. JDM EJ25D shortblock (& 1.5mm headgaskets), EJ22E heads, Delta 220 cams. Comp ratio should be around 10.4:1, so still reasonable. We'll see how the ECU handles the cams and displacement. I've heard idle can be a problem. Rolling Eyes I guess I could hack into the ECU maps, I've done it on my other Subaru.

I decided to use the Subaru MLS headgasket, and I drilled new holes for the coolant passages. It was a big pain, I had to delaminate the whole thing and debur my holes, but I think it'll be ok. The Cometic hybrid gasket would be a lot easier, but I wonder if it's as good as the Subaru MLS one.

Some things were freshened up, otherwise it's just a JDM low mile shortblock. New oil separator plate (steel), rear main seal, pump o-ring, water pump (normal EJ22 one), etc. I'm glad I took the oil pump off, the screws inside holding the gerotor together were backing out! Shocked

It's mostly back together now, hopefully done by this weekend:

I have noticed oil pump screws loose on a motor or 2 in the past also, they always get loctite before I install them. I should have mine done this weekend as well.
Good to hear that you are also building one of these up as well. I know that you are picky about things and your motor should be nice when fired up. Cool

Please let me know how the cams turn out, I am going to run stock for now but I can always swap them out later fairly easily.

Well the motor is in the van and running. I rolled the lip on the front crank seal when putting the pump on and it pissed oil down the front. Luckily I hadn't put the covers on the timing belt yet. I think this seal is best installed after the oil pump is installed.

Idle is pretty bad because it's way too lean. I can see the ECU trying to correct AFR up to +20% (to get the O2 to toggle), and then it gives up and goes back to 0%. It can't close the loop, and I don't want to drive it when it's this lean.

There's 87 in my tank right now, and even just blipping the throttle I can hear it knock. Probably because it's super lean, too.

So what next? I have found the ROM locations for timing maps, fuel map, and idle speed, and plan to retard the timing just a bit and fix the mixture. My '92 Legacy "F9" ECU has a socket for an EPROM, but it uses an unusual kind (just like my WRX motor) so I ordered parts to build some more adapter boards to use a conventional EEPROM. Stay tuned, should be here in about a week.

Higher flow injectors?

Let them spray more fuel for the same pressure and pulse width?

Just an idea.

Or one of those tweakable wide band o2 sensors and black box to foul the ECU?

What is comm port telling you about how the engine is running?

(I just got the correct cable (MUST be FTDI based) to communicate with the SSM and Evoscan. I will play with it later......)

I thought I would clarify on this. The downward facing water pump outlet (like EJ22E) has a hump in the front cover for this outlet. The cover for the side facing outlet (like EJ22T, EJ25) is flat where the pump is. So the covers are not the same.

I have a good flat style cover if you need one syncrodoka. I wanted to use it as it was in better shape than my old one, but it does not fit with my water pump.

The stock 280cc/min @ 3 BAR injectors have enough flow for 170 HP comfortably, so these are ok. The frankenmotor might even have less horsepower than a stock EJ25D. And no need for band-aid black boxes either, as I will be modifying the maps inside the ECU, just like an aftermarket ECU.

I am using the FTDI cable I made with the "Scosche" stereo connector. It works good with EVOScan, JECscan, etc. That is how I saw that the O2 is lean and the AF correction maxes out at 20%. I also downloaded the entire ROM through the cable (It did take an hour!), and you can see the stock maps in the pic above from that download.

All the reading I have done said it should work good with the stock ECM even with the Delta cams.

Might want to PM Matt Monson on NASIOC, he seems to be one of the pioneers on the Frankenmotor.

I have a 2001 EJ25 that I am going to start a build with.

GD has a lot of experience with these frankenmotors. It seems the OBD2 ECUs are better at handling these changes.

So the cams are too much for the OBD1 ECU?
I know of a pair of frankenmotors that run well but they have stock cams.
