I am looking at getting a squareback but am unfamiliar with type 3's.
How would i tell what year it is by looking at features.
I know it is 4 lug, has a swing axle trans with the z bars.
My guess would be 67 or 68 but I don't know when they went to 4 lug and am unsure how long the z bar lasted on type 3's (didn't even know they had them, thought it was just a bug thing).
I don't have the vin but hopefully will be able to get back to the car soon and check that.

if it has an indent for a finger, it's a '68 - if not, it's a '69...

and this is assuming that the fenders are original and not swapped...

then, there is always this for light-reading:

It does have the indent for the finger, I am assuming it is og as the whole car has the same fade pattern and is all original light blue paint.
thanks for the info.

Would be a 68 then. The 69 would/should also have IRS and not swing axle.

Also need to know if the car can be towed with a bug towbar, I'm guessing it won't but figured i would ask.

Nope. Rent a tow dolly or trailer.

I am dealing with an old farmer that has no phone, I grew up not far from him and have managed to get almost all of his vw stuff, and untill this last trip he has been reluctant to sell the square or the fasty (going to restore them some day). He has over 300 cars on his property and i am also trying to get some of his american cars as well but they have been nearly impossable to get.
