This must be a first in the history of used Vanagon sales. Obviously, the seller is not aware of the time honored tradition of selling poorly maintained Vanagons with the tag of "A/C just needs a charge." |
I'd have expected working A/C to be a desirable feature in both TN and AZ whether you planned to sell or not. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Lines cut, compressor missing, condenser punctured = "Just needs a charge."

Something not quite right there.
Virginia plate on the van when it was flatbedded.
Brand new front seat covers - at only 54,000 miles? Our van had 229,000 on it when we bought it and the corduroy was nice all over.
Fierce orange rust.
The DS outer rocker skin lines don't look right to me.
The rear trailing arm pickup points should be body colour, not painted black. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Whew! $37K. It's a nice van but I'm not sure that it's nearly $14K better than the '86 above. Deductions for a manual trans with 234K miles, deleted head restraints and missing oem cabinet door. Possible upside given for a decent GW engine and a 7 year old paint job that appears to still lol okay.

Decent van, but why is the drivers door latch painted, replacement door?
Terrawagen Flares are a nice upgrade, but the original intention of the flare was as a protector to avoid wet or dirty pants when entering vehicle. They were made in 2 pieces so that one attaches to door and one to the body. Seems tome that someone was not reading directions.
Some bad handles and a bad dash, I'm sorry for that kind of money that stuff should be nice.
I think it was a fair price for the buyer if it hold up as well as presented, time will tell.

$37,000 for that is crazy. I like how the engine drips on the clean concrete right at the end of the cold start video. |

And a new contender enters the ring:
A 1985 1.9L with some suspect bodywork and rust repair. Given that it was refinished in 2018 and the rust is already starting to appear on a California vehicle, gives me cause for concern - also the panel below the hook up boxes appears quite warped?? Anyways, be interesting to see where this one nets out:

I know this isn't a Vanagon, but my guess is that this auction will be interesting. A pedestrian 1st gen Tundra pickup with 16K original miles may go for over $30K. It's already at $20K with five days to go. Original sticker was $30K so it's not close to selling at double the sticker price like some Vanagons but these Tundras have doubled in selling price since 2019. FWIW...

My 2004 Tundra is awesome, I paid $8K with snow blade installed, two years ago. Lots of miles, doesn't seem to be a problem. Some of these trucks go a million miles on that original drive train. Good stuff.

In Canada, anything 'Toyota Truck' holds its value exceptionally well and yes, if maintained, they will run a million miles, which is likely a testament to their value retention. My son purchased a 2018 Tacoma and while it had a high sticker price, his rationale was that even if he drove it for a year or two he c/would still sell it for a few grand less than sticker price. Older Tacos and 4Runners (and Lexus SUV's) do exceptionally well on BaT, often going for more than or close to original list price. The other vehicles that do quite well are Jeep Grand Wagoneers and mid-1990's Cherokees. I am currently kicking myself for selling my low-mile 1995 Cherokee Sport, knowing the condition it was in and the price it would fetch today on BaT... _________________ 1991 Westfalia EJ251, 1972 Volvo 1800 ES |

Sold for $22K. Clean early model year Vanagons are fetching pretty good money...
