Not going to start this argument on this thread. The OP can do the research and decide for himself, it's been covered. Seems like most that have had problems with radials haven't installed them correctly or maintained proper tire pressure... _________________ Daniel

I cant speak for them personally and they are a little pricy but look at Diamond Back tires. They have most of the popular VW sizes in whitewalls.

radials have a flexing sidewall, bias plys do not operate the same way. suit yourself, ill choose buying real firestone whitewalls, over portawalls and death in my vw from rolling it on the freeway. some times vw guys need to stop being cheap , especially when it comes to safety- its quite alarming how some people are in regards to safety _________________ Official 58-60 "Early Big Window" Convertible Thread & Registry

only if you're an idiot would you use porta walls on radial tires. They can only be used on bias- plys. They cut a ridge in the tire in less than 3000 miles and your tire blows out. Buy real whitewalls, or sell your Vw and buy a Chevy impala with portawalls |
Or, for that matter, keep the VW and buy an Impala with real whitewalls. _________________ Driving in the slow lane since 1969. |

Funny, I know a lot of people running portawalls on mid 50's American cars with LOTS of flex in their radial tires and no deaths, tire failures, or malformed babies for that matter. Just cuz you don't like something doesn't mean should /can bash it. Like your mama told you; "if you can't say anything nice(or contribute positively)..... |

I've run both- and I'm amazed how fast the Port-a-walls seperate and look like crap on a radial tire. As an issue of safety- they compromise the tire bead-to-rim bond. They are probably fine for cruising- but I'd never cook down the freeway with a layer of rubber keeping my radial tire from completely sealing the rim again. Also, if you have a tire run low quickly (like happens when you're at work)- you'll wear the portawall before the tire's sidewall. Then, when you air up- you get to look at your damage henceforth.
Get Firestone 2-3/4" Ww from Coker or Lucas- mine have be great for far longer than they should. _________________

Oh man that pic takes me back!!!...One of my dad's buddies had a '65 Impala SS, showroom condition, red, 327 cid, no power brakes or steering that he was selling...I drove it to high school for a week with a for sale sign in the window...Dad wouldn't let me buy it though, thought I'd hurt myself with it...He was probably right...lol... _________________ My motorcycle has a radiator, but my car doesn't..... |

I had one of these (not this one, but same color, etc). '65 Bel Aire. 283 w/327 heads, mild cam, headers. Nothing special, but it sure drove nice and had a beautiful sound. Sold it to my brother, and his wife promptly wrecked it into oblivion.
