Partial vent partial WTF I guess......

Just started a new project that's at 86'. Picked up 15'' steelies and General Grabber AT-X for it. When I went to a local Discount Tire to have them mounted, the tech said that they were not a high enough load rating for the van. Ended up buying KO2 which would have been my first choice were I able to find them.

So now I see certainly the AT-X are fine. WTF??? What do you do in this case? I'm stuck with a set of AT-X that I'll lose $120 if I have to ship them back and the KO2 were about $150 more. Seems like a hose job.

**** Edit- This is totally my own fault... I bought ATX SL. So per the manager I just talked to, the standard load is a light truck tire etc. Totally F'd that one up.

Yokohama Geolander A/T is really the only option in that size, but has a load rating of 96 (1565@51).

Thanks. Yep. Does anyone know if that 1565 load rating needs to be devalued by 9% or is it a truck rating and thus full value? (I can never figure that stuff out.)

I asked TireRack and they said the Geolander should be devalued 9%

That is what I was afraid of. That puts them at too low a load amount for a full westy. Damn.

The 215/70/15 Geolandars worked well on my Westy and were right at the load rating IIRC. 26.9" diameter.

The smallest LT size in Geolandars is 215/75/15 (or it used to be.)

Now that looks promising. Only 0.5 inches larger in diameter too.

Reposting this from another thread as I am also wanting to stick with the stock diameter to maintain performance and uphill power. Your best bet may be the new “All Weather” tires with the three peak mountain snowflake rating.

I am probably going to try the Michelin CrossClimates when my Nokian WRC3s age out. It is very hard to find these unless you order online.
https://www.tires-easy.com/205-65-15/nokian-tires/wr-c3/tirecode/T429136

I have watched several promotional videos and the CrossClimates look impressive, and should be able to get easily with Michelin's USA network. They are cheaper than the Nokians too.
https://www.tires-easy.com/205-65-15/michelin-tires/agilis-crossclimate/tirecode/04143

I did come across an even cheaper 3rd all weather tire option in that size with a 99 weight rating, the Firestone WeatherGrip, but I would prefer the 102 rating of the Michelins.

Thanks but I really want AT tires for my euroBus. I’ll be traveling on some very sketchy roads (even paved ones) over in Europe (Eastern Europe especially) and I want the durability of an AT tire.

Per Discount tire, the SL is not rated high enough for a vanagon based upon VW's guidelines. I'm at a loss.

**So they're not saying that it's not a truck tire, just that it's a light truck tire which is apparently not acceptable.

just a smidge taller you can get a GRABBER A/TX - SIZE: 205/75R15

I am OK with that size but the load rating does not seem to be enough. Am I correct in that thinking?

edit:
how about a 195 snow with a high load rating?

It needs to be an all terrain for the durability.

I could go up to a 215/70/15.

I got my new tires mounted on Saturday.

General Grabber ATX, 215/75/15.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Too early first impressions:

--You can really see how f*cked up my paint is in these pictures.

--They're narrower than the 225/70/15's they replaced so my sliding door doesn't rub the back tire when I open it; that's a plus.

--While confirmation bias is in play here, these are just better tires than the Coopers they replaced. The sidewalls are stiffer but the tread seems softer if that's possible. The van is more stable in wind (tested at 70 MPH on I-70 in a 30 MPH cross wind.) Much easier to control.

--No difference in road noise; both these and the Coopers are quieter than my old BFG's and not as quiet as Geolandars.

--The van doesn't dip or lean nearly as much in corners, again I think due to the sidewalls.

--We got some thick, wet, slushy snow on Saturday night, so yesterday morning I went out and slid around in it a bit. About equal to the Coopers as far as snow and ice grip goes.

--They look cool.

I'm going over the mountains through a forecasted snowstorm early Wednesday morning then out to the desert for the rest of the week. I'll have some real world experience very soon.

Seriously looking at these:

Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 - Size: 215/70R15

Load range 98
Max psi 51

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=...ngsReviews

They are only about 2% taller than a 205/70/15.

Does anyone have anything I should consider when thinking of these?

In looking at the description, the ones I've been talking about (and that I bought two consecutive sets of--only time ever) are the discontinued Geolandar ATS. The AT G015 is the newer version.

The big complaint with the ATS from a few trusted Samba people was poor snow and ice performance. I guess I never drove my 2WD in enough snow and ice to notice any problems. The G015 is supposed to be much improved in winter conditions.

Interesting. I had a set of Geolandars about 15 years ago and they were rock hard in the winter. Helpless in snow or wet grass. Glad the new ones are supposed to be better.

...the tire features Yokohama’s Enduro Compound, made from an orange oil compound with a high silica content, for improved braking and handling in wet and winter conditions. The Geolandar A/T G015’s winter performance is also backed by the mountain/snowflake symbol and meets the RMA’s severe snow service criterion.

/\/\/\/\ Those General Grabbers look like they'll help your bus take on any road or trail!

I've been really enjoying the Nokian WRC3 205/70R15 tires. The 205/70 have a load range of 106/104. I've been airing them at 42 front / 46 rear.
They are a nice combo of good on the highway, good in the snow, and are mildly aggressive.

(Side note: I'm looking for a single GoWesty 15" alloy if anyone has one they want to sell)
