I made a goof for you. I didn't mean the torsion bar, I meant the sway bar. I'm an idiot at times.
Remove the sway bar and see if that helps your off roading any. It's a free, limited time ordeal. It won't hurt anything. |
What all does the sway bar do to affect offroading? I have mine on and haven't had anything STOP me yet BUT if I take that off then it would be even better? What would it do for stability, safety or weaking of other parts?
Just want to know before I yank mine off. _________________ Ron Paul 4 President

it limits the ability of the front wheels to act independently. If one tire climbs a rock and the other tire dips into a hole simultaneously the sway bar will lift the dropped tire off the ground. the ability to have both wheels go opposite ways is "Articulation"

Sway bars resist rolling to the outside in high speed turns. If you slalom through traffic 30 miles an hour faster than traffic, leave it on. If you live in a little desert town and can get to off road areas without your tires tasting freeway, yank it.

ok so i have a stock irs suspension and when i bought the car she came with some cheap coilover shocks that hit my bottom spring plate stop everytime i go over a speedbump. what is the stock extended lenght and stock travel, in other words what measurement shocks should i be looking for?
thanks,

vw's arnt jeeps I never ran a sway bar on any of mine, making a off road baja isnt going to be a street racer so your not going to be needing it anyways (at least mine and a few of my buddies dont)

if the stock shock mounts are still there then search for shocks for your year and type of car. _________________ 70% of what you buy is something to start with.

ok so i got another quick question. as my car sits now i have about less then 1 inch of down travel before my spring plates bottom out , could it be that the previous owner lifted the rear end of my car but just never got around to putting the type 2 cv joints and cutting the bottom limiter? here are some pictures, it might look a little higher because i just recently cut the rear fenders.

The purpose of having coil overs is to be able to eliminate the torsion entirely. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

if the spring plate is hitting the stop, which is often the case when the torsion bars have been adjusted, you can notch the spring plates or cut the stop.... but then you need to install type 2 cv's (or others) that can handle the increased axle angle ..AND you need to confirm that your shocks will be long enough...AND you will still want to put a strap or stop to limit your axle travel to the limits of your chosen cv joint. It looks like to me that the stop HAS been cut in that picture where your finger is |

well actually the thing to the right of my finger is what the spring plate is hitting, also putting type 2 cv joints is it just buying type 2 cv's and putting them in or is there more to it? _________________ if it doesn't break, you're doing something wrong

You would also need bus or thing stub axles, adn depending on the trans you're running, you may also need flanges for the trans and different axles. |

I got kyb all around, its getting time to replace them. I have 8 shocks though so its probably going to be expensive. I can gladly use your input, before I spend a fortune. |

I'd suggest luisbaja disconnects his rear shocks to tell if it is the torsion bars that are lifting it.
Is it really worth T2 CV's with stock trailing arms? _________________ 1974 Standard Beetle to Baja Bug

Can get a set of 5520 and 4529 for less than the es9000
So the kyb's hold up pretty good...I don't plan on jumping the car or anything but would like to buy a shock that will hold up. Not looking to spend 200 per shock either ( would love a set of foxes but not in the budget) _________________ 68 swing axle baja ( making 4x4s look stupid )
