Old skool "T" trailer...Dont get much lighter...
I seriously doubt even with small 2 wheel utility trailer and sand rail you will come close to your 5K limit...

My 2 axle car carrier (7K gross) only come in at about 1400 pounds empty...

These are custom built? Or where do I find them for purchase? |

Usually custom built. You could possibly pick up a tow dolly and have welding shop extend the tongue..
That is also why I included suggestion of basic utility trailer....

If you can fabricate, a boat trailer is an easy conversion. Plus, they have more ground clearance than most car trailers. Picking the right trailer to modify is the most important part. I advertised on craigslist and found many with the boat still on them. Opted for a bare trailer for $200.
My friend found an old house trailer frame and made a two buggy trailer. We used 2X12's for the rails. Very easy to do.

Personally, I would see if you could find a junk tent trailer, and use its frame. That's what I started with. I got lucky and found a stripped one for $110. Bought an axle with brakes for $50 and turned it into this.
A rail would fit on it, and it is so light that one person can pull it around. As loaded it has more weight on it than a typical rail and it tows like a dream. It has to for me because I pull doubles. As it is loaded, it probably has close to 2000lbs of cargo on it. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

In Arizona you can only pull doubles IF the first trailer is a goose neck or fifth wheel.
Don't ask how I know that:)

love the flat trailers but I can not justify spending the cash on that at this moment. looking for a cheap alternative one that is also able to be stood up in the side of the house when not in use Or if length will work, slid under sandrail. In garage. I like the modify idea going to need to check into the modifications. Also keep my eye out online see what I see |
