I just installed a full set of Australian gauges and the speedo cable fits and "works" but the plastic nut that screws onto the back of the speedo is too big.

Anyone (blankmange maybe Smile ) know what speedo cable is correct or have a line on an Australian spedo cable?

Here's the pic of the gauges installed.... (car was running so the tach is right Smile )

been there, done that - you will need to find someone in Australia that has a late '72 or '73 cable that has the odd coupling nut on it....

got any pics? what did you do with the wiring?

crap... thanks for the info... at least I know what needs to be done now. Maybe I can get my cousin down there to do some shopping for me. Very Happy

I'll snap some pics tomorrow and throw them up. I didn't get done until after dark. I had to tear the speedo apart (again) to rough up the drive rod. I did it last night but not enough and it quit again after 11 miles.

For the fuel gauge, gen and oil light I pulled 12v from the fuse box where the other gauge pulled it from. Moved the park, high beam, and signals over and jumped the gauge lights from top to bottom. Tach was already wired from the VDO I had. The only thing I might play with some more is the turn signals. Right now I put a relay in the circuit to isolate the ground feeding back from the gauge. I might play a little more and see if I can use the switch feeds to run a true left and right turn signal lights in the speedo. It works like the U.S. style now at least.

I also made the mistake of touching up the orange paint on the fuel gauge and tach. It looks nice and bright but the lines aren't as sharp as the originals machine painted. Something else to play with later.

this is where I started the gauge swap on my frankensquare:

from the next page or so:

I think I have figured out your wiring problems. I have been studying the back of your aussie speedo, and have it figured out.
The aussies have seperate indicators for each side.
I see that the pigtail wires on the one light has a black/white wire. That would just be connected to the wires going to the left turn signals.
The other one has a black/green wire. It will be connected to the right turn signals. These should not be connected any place else. It is basically like they are a third T/S bulb.

so where should I run the separate wire for the turn signal from?

Where I have marked on this diagram. There is a 3 way connector there now, you will either need to use a 4way, or just splice your wires into those.
Color for color.

I undid the hazard switch, rather than try to trace the wires under the dash, ran two pigtails, one to each turn signal and it worked...

now, I just need to run a splice in each and the buzz is gone...

SWEET!

Thank you Russ...

oh, and BTW, I think I may have speedo cables that'll work coming from Australia as well...

and just a heads up: if you get the speedo cable and it's marked made in either Germany or Brazil, send it back: it's the wrong one.... what you are looking for was made in Australia, just like the gauges were....

no - it didn't (I thought I said so in my build thread?) and I should have mailed it back to you....

the threads were wrong on it....

Yeah no doubt!!! Very Happy

When I read thru your build thread for the wiring I saw that pic and thought he same thing. It's kinda uncanny. I bought the car with the flat black on it and added the turtles. I swear I didn't see yours and copy. Laughing

First post is now updated with the pic of the gauges too.

Thanks again for the wiring tip, it made it easy.
