Great find Chris.
Wondering if the roof was open as the sign post looks to go through the opening.
At what point did they decide to rip the roof off and mount a sunroof split on a pole?? wow
Do you know when they took it down?
Trevor |
Just thankful they didn't cut the roof and rocker to get it around the pole There are a couple of bolt holes in the front cowl of the sunroof so I believe the pole was attached (but not supported) there.
Sometime in the sixties judging by the cars outside and in the showroom. anyone care to try to pinpoint the earliest that picture was taken by the years of the cars?
The streetlights in the pic are stylin too. _________________ "Love and good roads" |

1963, but most likely 64 since the beetle has small windows and the 1500 has the early wrap around lens (64-67) |

I think he told me it came down 71ish because of some sign bylaw that came into effect.
I think you guys should re-do the sign ontop of your clubhouse. |

Been really searching into the cars history lately and been finding some cool stuff out. Also was sent a few pics of it from when it was fresh off the pole (Thanks Peter B.).
The history I have been able to figure out so far:
It was originally owned by a lady who imported the car herself (it was before any beetles were officially delivered to Canada. She drove the car from Ontario to BC and was living in Vancouver.
She traded the car in for a newer car at Speedway Motors in 1963. The Salesman for Speedway said he remembers the day she brought the car in clearly as he reached in the car and turned on the radio and said that was the first time he heard that Kennedy had been shot.
Roy Passmore said that his dad opened the delership and they were racers, and that it was the partner who was building the race cars with his dad that had the idea of putting the beetle up on the roof. He also said that when the queens motorcade came through during the queen's visit in 1971 she drove by in her "convertible whatever" and pointed to the beetle and could be clearly heard saying "look at the beetle"..
I figure it went up on the pole sometime around 64? It was taken down in '75 and sat on the lot for up to a year. It had a brief owner who owned it for a couple of years, and then was purchased by the person that we bought it off of (owned it for approximately 35 years). _________________ "Love and good roads" |

I remember the car from my youth in Victoria. Your dates for going up and coming down sound about right based on my vague recollection.
I'd heard about the car being stashed, but good to see it in the hands of someone looking to bring it back to life.
It was a landmark for years! _________________ I have Lots of parts for sale on Vancouver Island, mostly type 1 but some Type 2/3 as well. |

As she sits now. Lowered on BRMs. Most of the mechanical stuff is done. We're gonna have some fun with it first and then maybe do it right someday. Our friend Kevin is inspired and wanting to drive this car to the Great Canadian VW Show August 26th so he's been putting lots of time into it. It's just going to be ratty as seen here. There's been a crew of friends helping strip/chip off about 8 layers of paint. It's now mostly down to the original Azur blue with some burgundy primer that was under the white paint. I think Speedway may have painted it white before it went up on the pole.

That's awesome! There's a neglected '60s Bug on a pole near here that I'd love to rescue, but definitely not as cool as yours! _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6. A couple weeks have past but thought I'd post to say we did get the Pole Dancer running and it was driven (for the first time in 48 years) to the 2012 Great Canadian VW Show. Many thanks to our buddy Kev and all the other great people who had a hand in getting the car ready. It seemed to be a hit at the show.

Bringing up the old here but I’m curious if anyone knows how this car is doing these days, I remember it being sold to someone in California who had turbo engine plans for it. |
