I have not driven my car in a long while, so I had to charge the battery. Then, I cranked on it a little and realized all the fuel in the bowl had evaporated and the fuel in the line had drained back. I shot a little starting fluid in the carb and hit the key. It sputtered to life momentarily until the starting fluid had been burned off. I hit the key again and it started momentarily, then died. I hit the key again and nothing. The starter does not react at all. I can see the oil and generator lights dim slightly when I hit the key, but nothing happens. I switch on the headlights to ensure I have plenty of battery and they work fine, only dimming slightly when I hit the key. Thinking the starter may be stuck engaged to the flywheel, I engage reverse and jockey the car back and forth. I can see the engine turning slightly as the car rocks back and forth. Tried the key again, nothing. I have never had an issue like this. It's as if the starter just froze up. Any ideas?

Smack it with a hammer, or check the power wire. My wire would keep falling off. Maybe it just needs new solenoid if it's old. Or possibly charge the battery again, or check battery

VW's are cars. Cars are not meant to leak oil. So if your VW leaks I think you should fix it. Be like me and have no leaks

Eh? The ol' "smack it with a hammer" remedy Very Happy

(I was actually thinking of doing that, but not sure what it would accomplish.) The battery is juiced up, so I ruled that out. Other starters that failed gave evidence beforehand, not just quitting all at once. This is not what I was looking forward to today Mad !

Starter has done that a few times. Just sticks once and a while. Could e bad but hey why not? Worse thing is that you need a new starter. Which I say starter cause auto zone has them for like 35 or a solenoid for over 100$. Hope you get it up and running

Try crawling under and jumping it with a screwdriver. If it turns over you need a new solenoid. It's been several years but when it happened to me I was told at Napa that they don't stock VW solenoids anymore. I would have to buy a new starter. But that was before Samba. I imagine someone here would have solenoids for sale.
