PostPosted: Fri Nov 25, 2011 3:37 pm    Post subject: Carbs started popping all of a sudden Reply with quote

Was driving my car yesterday and all of a sudden I lost power and the rt side carb started to pop like a firecracker. I lost some power and the popping was continuous as I limped home. The popping is in the barrel that is over the #2 cylinder and gets worse with acceleration. The popping causes a poof or mist of gas, even through the air cleaners. I have a 1968cc stroker motor with dual Weber 40 IDF's, electric fuel pump set at just less than 3lbs. Car was working fine before this happened. I did check the jets for debris and found nothing, the #2 cylinder plug was grossly black and dry. I posted this in the 58-64 forum, but this is the correct forum, sorry for the duplicate post.

If its not some thing stuck in the jets or carb it could be a intake valve hanging open, have you pulled the valve cover off ? Did you check all the jets? [idle, air, main, E-tube]

Lighten up Frances

You really think that I think its the distributor? If you'll look of at the persons post above mine .......in his signature...........he says " I refuse to call a distributor a dizzy..."......it was a joke.....

Personally I think the popping is one of two things...1- he "looked" at the jets and decided they're clean when they're not.......2- its a valve which could either be sticking or there's a problem with a rocker arm........other than that I wouldn't know.....

I only blew out the main and idle jets. Changed the plug but still no change. I will check all of the things mentioned above tomorrow.

I wouldn't check them........I would pull them out.....put them in a can of carb cleaner .......let them really soak.......and then blow them dry with compressed air........also do what someone else mentioned and pull the plug on that cylinder for that barrell......may have fouled the plug and if the jets were the problem you'll put them in and still have a problem because the plug is fouled...

My WAG is that #2 exhaust rocker has come off shaft or the push rod has popped out of rocker arm.
If it and AutoCraft hi-ratio rocker shaft or cheap imitation shaft could have broken off. They do that. Even the guys at AutoCraft will tell you the shafts need changing every so often. They break right at hole for rocker stud.
If you can't get it out, you can get it in.

I had the same thing on a different engine (Ford Escort) and it ended up being a broken lifter that ended up chewing a lobe off the cam on one of the intake valves.

Of course I got a cold over the weekend. I did manage to get into the garage and puled off the valve cover. The pushrod on the #2 cylinder is disengaged from the rocker arm, I will repair tomorrow if I am up to it. What causes this to happen?

Changed rockers, adjusted valves and all worked well for one trip. Came home from the show and had fouled the number 2 plug. Car has been running great for the last year......clogged jet?
