So, how many owners of this exotic VW attend this forum? Let´s make this topic for sharing information, links, ads, interesting and non-published pictures etc.

There s lot misinformation on the web regarding Type 147 so let´s keep this topic informative.

Let me be the first:

This is my 1973 swiss version Type 147, one of 1201 ever produced.

wow that is fantastic, what´s the story behind? Was it stored in a museum or private collection, or simply postal service forgot that they have one delivery van stored in a warehouse for 30 years?Smile

Can I ask you later for some pics of interior panelling? My fridolin doesn´t have any (apart from sliding door panels) and I would like to mimic original interior panels. I don´t know how and where they were attached.

I have imported a total of 6 to the US. I purchased them from Germany and England, with help from my friends Robert and Jens. The Fridolins I once owned are now spread throughout the country from Florida to Hawaii. I still own a Swiss model along with miscellaneous parts and accessories. In the near future I hope to be making some pretty significant improvements and upgrades.

Hi Guys,

I am now the proud owner of a Frid.
It's a 1974 Swiss model.

I have never even heard of these until today! I would love one of these as a shop car! Perfect for getting parts or running parts, not to big but not to small you could fit motorcycle tins or even an engine in the little guy! They gatta be super rare I'm sure. Grats on you guys that scored one.

I own a 1970 Frid. Thought to be German model but recently found out it is indeed an early Swiss model. Doesn't have bigger back window or corner windows but does have panels on walls, top vent, and an external gas heater under hood. I got it in 2005 and it sat for 5 years. Now for 2 it has been undergoing a rebuild. Having to fab all rusted panels. Hopefully this will be my year to drive it.

To my Knowledge Swiss versions of the Frid did not start being produced until 1972... Swiss have big window, corner windows and a vent on the front roof centered above the windshield... Please refer to FridolinIG.com What you described is a German... You can run serial numbers with IG they are the Fridolin Bible... If it is a Swiss what a great find it would be and a prototype!!! Cheers

The Schweizer Bundespost PTT (Swiss Postal Service) ordered 1201 cars from 1965 to 1974, although in a modified version due to changed requirements: They had a 1,3 litre 44 PS engine, front disk brakes, auxiliary heater, ventilation hatch in the roof, outside mirrors not attached to the doors but to the front fenders, a custom made interior paneling and during the last years of manufacture a larger scale window in the tailgate and additional windows in the rear corners, to improve the view from within the car. In 1974 the production of the Fridolin ended, but a small reserve stock of new cars was put into commission by the PTT until 1977.

The Swiss post kept them in service for a long time also.
Mine is a 1974 model, and it was kept in service until 1987, according to the PTT log books that came with my Frid.

I do have a '71 Swiss Post Fridolin with no corner windows and and larger back window. It has also no roof vent. But it has the 1300 44PS engine, disk brakes in the front and a auxiliary heater.
Greetings from Switzerland
Roger
