ok so rumaging threw a Junk yard today for my dodge, came across a 81 westy vanagon real good cabinets by the way, I took the Z bed frame and swinging table (for sale) and worked my way around the back of the bus and there sitting on a tire under still connected by the axel's was a 6 rib tranny,

curious to know what, and if it could work in my 71 bay 1776..?? I did see a hydrolic clutch with a lil master bolted to a plate and thats what threw me off, I have been told change the bell housing and nose cone but not sure if there is a difference

Vanagon has a side shifter and I think getting everything to line up in an early bus would be a problem.

I thought so!!! 50 bucks for a 6 rib, for my bay Crying or Very sad oh well

still think im gonna go back and get all the westy cabinets out of it, Im sure someone can use them, there in good shape, and has the sink stove and fridge combo theres gotta be $$ in it somewhere..

I would verify that it is a front side shift as shown in that photo. If it is I grab it for the core value - hard to go wrong at $50 when they charge $400 for a core, then contact Rancho or another trans builder about converting it.

would you really want to jump from 5.37s to 4.56s in a '71?

I think im really gonna do some research befor I make a final, all tho my understanding was 6 rib was they way to go for a taller gear for highway use without going freeway flyer?? but like you said for the core cost im going back tommorow morning and spending 50 bucks as of right now Im 15 minuets late for work Shocked and still gotta drive 35 minuetes to get there oopps Wink guess ill be using my phone tonight for resaerch

You need to be sure of what transmission you are looking at. Go to all the trouble to install a side shift tranny hoping for a bit taller gearing only to find out is was an extremely low geared tranny for a NA Diesel would be a bummer.

Why would a diesel transmission be low geared?

The diesel hasn't got the balls to pull the gas trany gears so it has a lower R/P in it.

I have overhaul many of both 091 bus and air cooled vanagon and the insides are the same. you can even see where there would be the fill plug just vw didn't drill it on the vanagons I thing I need to double check is the shape of the nose cone as far as the shift rails are they are both the same but where the gasket is gos I think there mite be a difference that will screw the whole thing up I just haven't looked at one for sometime. [edit] I just looked in my manual (should have done that first) no you can not convert the two the nose cones are just different enough it will not work. Sorry transmissions for dummies is wrong.

Its not an easy job to converted an 81 trans to a front shift however not impossible to do it.

Get the transmission for that amount you wont regretted.

The codes that you are looking for are DK and DP which have 4.57 ratio and the later one has LSD M-Code 220.

Dont get this one:

You really dont want to swap the pinion,pinion shims and differential from one case to another cause you will need more specified tools to do the job right and have a correct geometry.

This is the transmission that you need:

You need some tools to accomplish the swap.

VW 381/14 To remove the pinion nut and split the case from the gear carrier.

VW294B To adjust the forks and reverse,if you cant find that tool or its too expensive you must sacrifice a case.

I know its wrong, however you may save way more transmissions this way,trust me on this one.

VW231/15 To remove adjusting ring or start by taping in the beginning and than use one of the covers.

At last you need a press to change the gear train from a vanagon gear carrier to baywindow style and I will explain the cause of it.

Those are the vanagon fork rails not correct for the job:

It would have been nice to just change the fork rails from a vanagon to baywindow and bolt everything back together and done with it.

However 81 gear carrier does not have the ability to hold the relay lever bracket as it is.

You may drill the carrier and make it work with some spacers underneath the bracket cause the depth is not the same for a correct geometry of the lever.

Not correct in my opinion,its better to have the following gear carrier:

Keep also in mind that if you want to swap gears they must be swapped as a set, not all gears are the same,you dont want a noisy transmission after all this trouble.

On bottom of case is stamped the numbers that tell=type,day,month and yr trans was built & ratio.

Yes it is possible change aircooled vanagon trany to a 091 bus IF you do a complete overhaul change out major components that is not a conversion thats a overhaul and needs to be explained as such and I should have explained it better myself but the OP Iam sure wasn't looking to overhaul a trany just swap a nose cone and this is not that. Not to mention if you do it right and swap the gear carrier you need to drill the fill plug hole in the main housing not a easy or cheap tap to get for one use. if you are going to go through the work of cutting a case open to make a jig why don't you go all the way so you can see what you are doing I have see so many times where the forks are adjusted wrong if you can't see feel and wiggle them around you can't get them right then you are taking it ALL apart again and redoing it.
