What color is the top reflective portion of the taillight housing for the late Type 3's?

I noticed that mine are a tarnished "copper" color and I have seen some that are more "silver-ish".

they should be reflective silver in color; you can freshen yours up with reflective silver paint from Eastwood's....

Thanks guys. Mine is a Nov 71 built 1972. Already started a little sanding and the copper look is giving way to silver.

they are normally chrome plated unless its the budget model "N"? they are silver painted.

sounds like the chrome and nickel? has come off and exposed the copper plating.

Wow, this is the second time this has happened. I was going to post a picture of an obscure question and here is a conversation already about it. Last time it was about a rack, but now I have questions about the front signal I got in the mail. It is chrome but the broken signal and all the others on my 72 squareback are all silver. Where did the chrome come from? A late 73? Here is a picture. The silver is in the back and seems to be more widely applicable due to the number of part numbers stamped in. Where exactly can I find the chrome housings? I like them better.

not sure when chrome or silver came about, I think its more what model you have.

all mine have been chrome while a 70 notch I bought some 6-7 years ago for parts had all silver everywhere. it was the pov package.

while I have my 71 now it had silver vent wing and uprights, but all chrome lamp holders but then again aussie type 3s were a bit of a mix and match.

btw whats up with those light globes? they are tinny Shocked

Never seen them like that before. All of mine had the large 21w globes that most cars have.

at the end of the run, vw cheaped out on the small bits because they were replacing the entire line. my 73 had silver lamp holders instead of chrome and came without any holes for side trim on the body panels.
it is interesting that while this was happening, the T4 got the opposite. its final year of production it got aluminum bumpers instead of the chromed stamped steel and L Jet FI.

I wonder if car color had any impact on the silver or chrome assemblies? Mine was originally Texas Yellow, maybe someone thought it would have looked better with silver instead of chrome.

Those are just the parking lights. The actual signals are the 21w bulbs. Look at the top photo of the back. See the terminals?

Hmm. So no clear pattern on how silver vs chrome came about?
Yea, Mike, I'm in the same boat now. I'd love to get a passengers side chrome front signal and now both rear signals. It just looks better.
Anybody wanna trade?

If you'd like 4 matching silver ones, I'm just up the road from you in Roseburg. I might let them go for a reasonable price.

I hope you didn't pay too much for either of those housings in the pics, as they are broken. What I mean by that, is the mounting boss for the lense at the outer edge is missing on both of them. Shocked

If you're looking for chrome housings, the Classifieds would be a good starting place. I know I need to track down a lense for my Square-vert one of these days (damn lawn mower handle got it). Embarassed

Well I guess I am a bit lucky that mine are silver and not chrome. Since I am modeling my Squareback after my T-reg, I am going to paint them black.

oh ok, yeah I see.

what...?? parkers inside the indicator housing?? first I have seen of that.

guess aussie cars don't have them. Also our indicator lens have no reflector, all orange and transparent.

btw my 73 square I had few years ago was fully kit'ed out with all the chrome goodies and features.

OK, so I have one primed and ready to paint. Obviously I need to paint the top light portion a nice reflective chrome, but would there be any need to paint the other bulb sections the same of at least something brighter than black?

I'd probably only paint the outside edge, and maybe a little on the inside edge. Keep in mind, that the top of the tail light is the turn signal, the middle is running and brake light, with the very bottom being a back up light. For the front, same thing kind of applies, in that the big reflector area is parking and turn signal, but the rest of the housing isn't an issue, since the little bulb sits closer to the lense than the other bulb.

Maybe you could post up a couple of pics. Wink
