I got option to get a 6 rib bus or a single side cover vw thing transmission. Both rebuilt and both roughly same price. Which would be the better option to put into the back of a bug for off road purposes?

Stock 1600 and planning on large(29-31") tires.

I would say the 6 rib for sure. Strongest vw trans and usually the most expensive. Has good gearing for offroad. You may have to change mounts depending what you currently have

Thanks guys, wasnt sure. I saw Lots saying get a 6 rib but then also saw something saying if you run across a thing trans get it. So was a little confused. The 6 rib is actually cheaper than the thing trans, $390 vs $430 shipped.

some European Thing trans had 4.375 gears, and all had CV flanges for Type 2 / Type 4 CVs

091 AKA 6 rib bus trans has 4.56 gears, and CV flanges for Type 2 / Type 4 CVs

6 rib is the better choice. you have to use a ten degree mount to keep the shifter in the tunnel, or live with the shifter above the tunnel to mount it level and get rubber mounts. either way, some fabrication required.

Make sure that 6 rib runs through all gears and stays in gear. You can double the expense and then some right off the bat.
