How hard is it to remove a parcel tray from a '64 deluxe? I am thinking of taking mine out and puting some POR-15 on it, as its got a little surface rust in some areas.
Thanks in advance. |

Super easy. Remove the screws on the panel, then remove the column bracket under the panel that attaches to the steering column. Slide it down. Then pop the parcel panel out. |

Cool. I haven't looked at it yet, but that sounds easy. |

Yeap, thats another thing. No problem though, just twist it off. Take off the dust cap, and C clip, and pull it out. Remember where it comes out from, so when you put it back it you know what holes/routes to use. |

It can be a pain to run it back down through the front nose. Being that it has to come off the wheel and the screw-on cap to the speedo will not go through the tray hole. If you are going to do just the tray, why not loosen it, pull it down, mask the areas you don't want to cover, and just do it "in place". That way you wont have to pull the speedo cable. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

And that's another one of my gripes with VW. Why didn't they make the hole in the tray big enough for the upper end of the speedo cable? Seems obvious to me. So you might have to put a grommet in the hole to keep stuff from falling thru, big whoop! _________________ Craig ('51 WASP)

Oh, and while I'm at it, drain holes in the tray for when the windshields start leaking. Ok, that's all. Rant mode off. _________________ Craig ('51 WASP)

Sorry to play devil's advocate here, but why treat the parcel tray with POR 15 for some light surface rust? Seems like a mighty big hammer to fix a mighty minor problem. If it's only light surface rust it shouldn't get any worse. If it's cancerous rust, then the problem needs to be addressed at the source of the moisture and then the tray can be fix/replaced.
Taking the parcel tray out sounds pretty easy, but when you have to mess with the speedo cable it really adds to the "hassle factor". _________________ -- Jeff--happyhippo

One of the POs of my bus made the hole in the tray bigger for the upper end of the speedo cable.... it does make for a nice drain hole when the rains come down... _________________ Chris

Removing the speedo cable takes like 5 minutes. Probably 10 minutes for the first time. |

I used some POR-15 on the underside of my bus a day to two ago and I have about half of a pint left in my fridge waiting to be used. I planned on doing half of my cab floor and the tray, if the tray was easily removed. It may seem like overkill, but hell, I gotta use it somewhere. |

Removing anything has hardly ever been an issue. It is the re-installing what can become a pain. But hey, whatever floats your boat! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I replaced my speedo cable a few months back. I used a painters light under the front of the bus so the hole could be easliy seen from the inside and a small mirror to see into the tight cavity on the inside. It was about a 15 minute job start to finish. |

One instance when rust was helpful!
PO on mine trimmed the speedo hole on mine so my removal is a piece of cake too. |

^^^ quite easy to do with a Unibit- and the bus will never know.
And in related news- rather than POR 15- why not prep and paint it- then try your hand at gluing vinyl in there- as was the case when new? _________________
