PostPosted: Wed Dec 07, 2011 7:54 am    Post subject: Tire and rim ? Reply with quote

I am working on a manx clone and have 17 x 9 in rims for the rear and 15 x 7 for the front. I have an early 1970's IRS freeway flyer trans and a 1835 motor. What size tire would you put on Question It will only be used on the street and has an adjustable lowered front beam. Thanks for the help.

If you are using a stock speedo, the front tire needs to be 26" tall.

I have not even bought a speedo yet. I will probably go with an aftermarket one. I am trying to build up my magic shelf as you call it. I also would like to go with the widest tire possible.

I have the same size wheels. Try to get 29" tall rear and low profile in the front. Mine are only 26.5 tall in the rear, I will be getting new tires or maybe new wheels.

I used this website. It is somewhat guessing the tire size and checking the wheel but few guesses, you get it.
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp
According to measurements of my pan (irs 1969), I will not exceed 28" of wheel diameter in the back.
Front I want to keep to below 27" diameter.
These are not determined by my engine but by the pan geometry and I have left a decent margin of error.

Just a thought...

Just remember; Wider tires make your drive train work harder. More rubber on the road means more rubber to move off the road.

On my Imp and most builds I try to stick to this formula. 5.5" or 6" on front with P215/60R15 tire. Rears 8" or 9" with P275/60R15 tire. That will give you a 26" tall front and 28" tall rear. I like BF Goodrich.
I don't know what I am going to do on the Manx right now. I am leaning to custom cut 17x6" front rims and 18 x9" rears. Don't know about tires yet.

lupo69,
Front : General Altimax HP 195/60R15 around 24" tall
Rear : RIKEN Raptor ZR 255/50ZR17 26 1/2" tall
The tread pattern is very close .. I bought these from someone else of the web but they did not tell me they were different brands. Pics looked like the same.
What kind of wheels do you have?

That's a really good looking wheel! Nice selection of sizes too.

Wheel hub looks kind'a small to swallow the big VW hubs (front bearing cap and rear axle nut)? Might be something to check into.

Personally, I prefer to stay within 1" diameter size front to rear, keep the overall look in proportion. But if a more radical size difference works for you - Go for it!
