The lady and I are going to head up to the Modoc Plateu this weekend in the westy if it doesn't snow here. I have checked out a lot of CA but never the NE section. We are taking our 2wd westy and not the syncro's as its already rigged up for cold weather camping. Any points of interest you can suggest ? Maybe a nice camp spot? We are thinking about taking 49 N out of Truckee(I'm in Tahoe City) and making our way up on the smaller roads.

Lassen is cool, there are some neat hikes through lava tube caves and up cinder cone vistas.
If you like to ride bikes you can do a one way shuttle ride (mostly downhill) on the Bizz Johnson rail-trail. It's a flat wide trail with a slight descent. A taxi out of Susanville will take you back to the van. It's quite beautiful in the fall. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Modoc County is actually a neat place. It's so little frequented that it seems unlike California at all. Lava Beds NM has a lot of petroglyphs and caves you can explore, but mainly it's just the old-time vibe of the area that got me. |

On your way out of town.. Stop by Placer Ski Bowl for a taste of old school ski resort.
Sierra Butte, Gold Lake?
(But being from Tahoe City, you've probably already been?)
Lassen is on my list as well. Have not toured NE CA much.. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

If you're hikers or backpackers the Warner Mountains are beautiful. Depending on the snow level of course. My experience is limited to one springtime backpack from the campground/trailhead near Jess Valley out of Likely. Very nice country.
edit: (Well, that was quick. I guess the photos got pulled for lack of VW content.)

One of my favorites is Mt Shasta and all suronding areas. Check out lovely Castle Lake. Modoc national forest- Tule Lake, Lava beds(tubes)
and Captn. Jacks strategic holdout area.
Then theres always the beautiful Klamath National forest, Scott river, Klamath river, Scott river with all the camping available in these areas. |

From Tahoe City, I'd head up HWY 89. Burney Falls is a great stop. Then head easy on HWY 299. If you've got a canoe, Ahjumawi Lava Springs SP is a must. Canoe camping with views of Shasta and Lassen, at the same time. Unique for sure. Just be sure it isn't duck season, or bring a shotgun |

I recall some nice hot springs on your route.
Start with this map and start Googling.
http://hotspringsdirectory.com/usa/ca/map_ca_all.html
Lots of USFS land, you can camp for free the whole trip.
Should be a great trip!
