I was wondering if they were seatbelt washers. They are metal and some do have a bit of rust pitting. _________________ 68 Ghia Regatta Blue Convertible

Yes i believe so. I did remove that myself and it didn't look like it had ever been disassembled since the car was built. _________________ 68 Ghia Regatta Blue Convertible

My license plate was directly mounted on the bottom holes marked the yellow rectangle on the picture. I found two more just above those two with Bondo a little further apart. Are those top holes where the license plate mount goes?

The three in the above middle and two towards the upper corners of your rectangle are all associated with the mount.

Dealers installed license plates so lots of different hole patterns were drilled depending on the mount they used. They usually used a plate mount like the one in the pic. Find a mount, match the holes if possible or weld and drill ones that work for "your" mount.

So, do the middle two bolts on that bracket attach to the lid? In other words, am I facing this picture looking from the lid towards the rear? |

I know where this part goes, but I don't know what it is called. I would describe it as a "seat base upholstery protective cover", but I'm literal like that. I've tried describing it to people at the KG- and VW-specific interior part vendors , but have drawn a big blank. That may just be because I'm not using the secret name.
The replacement seats I bought had the passenger side cover, but the driver's side part was missing and I need to find a replacement (OE or RP).

That's how I've been describing it to people when I talk to them (though not the exact words so that may be my problem), but no luck with reproductions. I'll put a WTB ad in the classifieds.
Thank you, John. |

FWIW, on late model VW seat parts listings that part appears to be simply referred to as a "Side Cover".
If you have the one for the seat on the other side, then you should be able to find a part number marked on it somewhere.
Although the two different sides will have slightly different part numbers, that should get you a lot closer to finding the correct one you've been searching for.
The part number should also help you find out if that particular part was used on any other VW models.
If that part was unique to just 1973-1974 Karmann Ghia seats, then there probably weren't too many of those plastic parts made in the first place and even fewer that have survived.
If, however, it was used on the Beetle or Type III as well, then it should be much easier to find one.
Good hunting! |

That's the mounting bracket/slide for the ashtray. It looks like it can be remounted maybe with oversized pop rivets.
This part prompted me to ponder all the thoughtful engineering that went into these simple cars. Just look at that spring-loaded capture mechanism on this ashtray mount that can be separated by partially opening the ashtray and then pushing down; and it's hinged at the rear so it won't just fly off! Growing up surrounded by air-cooled VWs my friends and I would laugh at all the parts that could fall off and not affect the goal of getting from A to B. After handling and looking closely at all of the inconspicuous parts, I understand how VW could advertise scores of invisible improvements each year, and I'm still impressed. Just sayin' |

What the heck is this and where does it go? We have a similar looking piece that goes on the passenger side under dash. But we can't figure out where this one goes? |
