The guys at the Bug Box, who were responsible for that magnificent 1:1 Sand Scorcher, are currently busy with a new exciting project: a 1:1 scale Wild Willy! Cool

But what is a 'Wild Willy'? From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Tamiya Wild Willy, released in 1982 was a Jeep with a detailed hard plastic body and a short wheelbase, making it capable of wheelies and other stunts. Its sealed electronics box also enabled it to traverse water without damage. It marked a new concept in R/C modelling and was very popular among both R/C and Jeep enthusiasts for both its fun and realism. Like many vintage Tamiya models good condition examples are now considered extremely collectible and mint in the box (unbuilt) examples can fetch almost US $1000. The original Wild Willy kit was revised in 1985 to give it a slightly longer wheelbase leaving the earlier, shorter wheelbase version quite hard to find. Wild Willy 2 was released in 2000 utilizing a pre-assembled Wild Dagger gear box and tires from Lunch Box, but otherwise a wholly new mechanical design. Wild Willy 2 retained the Jeep body with only a few minor differences, such as horizontal front grill slits instead of the vertical slits of the original. There has also been a metallic edition of Wild Willy 2.

The Bug Box have started with a fibreglass Jeep bodyshell which will be mounted on a heavily modified IRS Beetle chassis. A few pics of the project so far... this is gonna be exciting!

Nice build! But the Jeep bodyshell appears to be steel, not fiberglass...

We look forward to seeing this build when finished!

Man that is so awesome!

They should do the Subaru Brat next. Not sure if you guys got those down your way, and after the first two, the Brat would be a very simple build.

That's a very cool build.
The only glitch I can see is having the VW engine hanging so low and out the back - mostly fully exposed? That would seem to be a detriment to the overall look. Otherwise - I think it will be a great looking show car.

I guess being a bug shop, building a VW based car was the way to go. Seems like it would have made more sense to run some kind of front engine and RWD set-up? The air cooled VW base is probably a lot simpler way to go than water cooled RWD.

Keep the pics coming!

Thank God the military used stencils....if they painted all the vehicles with a brush, we would have lost the war.

I have no idea, just following the build on line - but I think it will be something quite discreet (all black, perhaps?), as the engine is not the main feature of the car. Nonetheless, I hope it will pop easy wheelies, like the r/c models! Cool

The attention to detail - especially making everything look like that on the 1:10 model - is unbelievable!
