I would like to say thanks for all the kind words! I have many projects going but this has been the one I've been thinking about the most!
Here are the latest updates, it may not look like much but major hurdle number one is done! The body and pan are one! Tonight I will be fitting the steering box and cutting the tie rods so we can steer it in and out of the shop. Than I will work on the front frame rails tying the two together (front and rear). I'll than borrow a motor to build the rear frame rails around, than this part of the build will be done. I have a major body modification next on the list, sand blast the body, than rust repair, put the panels back in, primer..... I'm sure you all get the idea!
This is the gusset that ties the lower frame rail to the torsion tube (one on each side)

Looking real good ! Almost looks like ghia floor pans would work in that. Whats your next major body mod? 2 door conversion? You going to keep the stock bumper setup? Its cool and funky, I like it. Cant wait to see more updates.

You guys blow my mind! 2 door conversion coming up next. I can't keep nothing a secret on here. The body will be all stock, bumpers included.

I think the body and paint look perfect just the way they are, but if your mods turn out anything like the rest of this build, it should be quite cool.

2dr FTW! everything looks better as a 2dr. A 2dr hardtop would be even better

Just a small update. I got the body cut for the steering box, narrowed the tie rods, and installed it all. I needed to see how much more I would have to cut the front to clear the tie rods (and to make moving the car easier) before I start building the front frame rails.
Heres the hole that I will make a access panel for and hide with a battery.

The stock column bolted up! (I'll be using one from a vw later on)

I'm hoping to get the front frame rails done this weekend!

Another small update. I got the front frame rails made and installed. Rather than doing 1x2 (no room) I used 2x3/16 flat bar to tie the front frame rail to the rear frame rail following along the body line much like the shape of a bug front quarter. I welded the frame rails to the flat bar and spot welded to body to the flat bar (I will later use a bronze filler rod and tig weld it all together but must do some rust repair in that area first). It made the front ridgid as thats what I was looking for.
Here is before I installed the frame rail (section in the center of the photo)

I'm picking up a motor tonight to install in the car so I can start working on the rear frame rails this week.

This is a great build, looking good already. Maybe Skim can convince you to keep the original paint.. Wink
