Cool. I'm glad to hear that my purchase seems like a good one based on your two year track record. To be honest as long as it lasts for 10 years or so i'll be very happy.
Looks like I might be attempting to rebuild the cylinder in my new Napa jack. Any pointers from the gallery? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

BUY IT
That is a dam good deal I got mine a couple of years ago and it was 180.00 on sale. but I tell you want it is the nicest atv/motorcycle jack I have ever used. ... |
Yes Gary, buy it. I will guarantee that you will like it. If you don't, I'll buy it from you. That's the guarantee.
We did the 300,000 mile maintenance on my camper, and I don't think I'll be needing to drop my engine for another ten years. If that jack would fit or clear my large oil sump and its heater, it would be far better than balancing the engine on the drain plug.
Let me know and I'll send you a check for $100 and we'll work out the ownership later.

Gonna dust off this "best and baddest jack" thread. I can balance a T-1 engine with tranny attached on my floor jack to R/R, I figured out the balance point. But It's a PITA. A couple of years ago I bought the Harbor freight yellow ATV jack. I never used it or put it together.
I am missing a few bits because I bought it at the parking lot sale. So I went to the store. It claims to lift 16" but it really only lifts 13" after it settles into the click stop. But they have a newer jack that I have never seen until now.
It costs about $100 more and claims 19" lift, it really lifts to 18 3/4". I love this thing but don't want to buy it because of HF hit or miss reputation. Has anybody else bought and used this? I'm getting ready to play with T-4's and possibly something else and don't want to fuck with precise balance points any more. |

I'm still happy with my $200 HF lifting table. Just a pain when you have a low hanging or long exhaust. And/or a deep sump I guess. _________________ Wash your hands

Snakes,
I have the first HF jack you mentioned, and it's a night and day difference in engine work outside the bus. With a regular floor jack, pulling and installing it by myself is sketchy at best. With the HF jack, I can pull it, break the torque on the gland nut, work on anything while maintaining balance, eat a sandwich, and install it by myself without fear of tipping anything over. I don't see a way in which the new jack would be better. A VW bus engine is what, ten inches off the ground? With either one of these jacks you can lift the engine, then support the trans with a floor jack. If all the wheels line up, you'll have a nice little train that will roll the entire assembly clean out the back of an early bay.
Everything HF makes seems to be powered by a bottle jack. The presses, floor jacks, lifting tables, etc… I have had good luck with their bottle jacks…
