|
|
I was wondering how a rear hurst bumper is connected to the bus, especially the sides. Looking at photos of real or repo, could not tell how the long bar that wraps around the side of the rear connects. Or does it at all? I tried to search bit didn't come up with an answer. My mistake for not having pictures but I mean where it touches the side of the bus by the rear wheel arch. _________________ '64 Bug

There are two places on each side panel where you would need to drill a hole for a through-bolt. Yikes! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Three holes per side, which is far fewer holes than you need to drill when you install safaris.
They are nice to stand on when you get things on or off the roof rack.
extra rear bumper brackets:

Don't they also have a bolt where the return is at the wheel well splash? |

The lower tube?
The lower tube bolts to the rear bumper at the normal bolt hole where the rear bumper attaches to the splash pan. There is a tab that pokes down from the lower tube.
That bolt is visible in the above pic.
There is not another bolt further forward on the lower tube in the wheel arch. What would it bolt to there?
Next time I have a set of Hursts installed I will take more pics. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

That bus rocked. Sold it a few years ago, not long after Vintage Meet 2007. The British buyer didn't want to pay for the original (but not to the bus) Hursts, so kept those.
At some point we'll put together another bus that will look awesome with them.
this pic might show the rear tube better:

Vintage Autohaus panel...Long Beach OCTO 2011. Shows less mounting detail than Clara's pic, but thought I'd add for additional comparison.

So there are 2 different styles of original rear Hurst? One that goes into the wheel opening and one that ends at the bumper. |

What about non-pressed bumper; are those attached to the wheel-well splash? |

Did they make them?
I have never seen a set of original non ribbed bumper versions. |

The rears fit a later bumper fine with some modification. You need to cut the angle iron bumper brackets where the J meets the angled piece and extend it about 2 inches. Also need to cut out the bumper brackets on the inside of the bumper and bolt the Hurst bumper brackets directly to the bumper. I did this to mine and the mounting pad on the side of the Bus split the body seam at the corners perfectly. I think I had to slot the bumper brackets a little as well.

Just guessing; kinda looks like one to me. Looking at the original pic you can make out a bit more of the shape. |

Having never seen the 'inside' of the body panel where the tube brackets mount, what makes the tube able to be stood on? Is there a larger steel plate that gives the whole mount strength? Thanks... _________________
