no the original ones were formed rubber. not foam, and not generic, they were made in the correct shapes. you can of course replace them with form weather stripping though. _________________

[air cooled vw's] are no longer suitable for the general public. The owner has to be be able to maintain the car. And that is after fixing all the deferred maintenance items and ill-conceived modifications. If you can't do those things you are pretty much screwed. |

Wich is better the late or early FI shroud?
The early shroud looks to be better due to the large slot,
But there must be a reason why they changed right?
I have got two late FI shrouds and one normal doghouse shroud with large negative slot, can i remove the venturi and weld it too the normal shroud as too have better cooling? |
From what Ive read the later FI shroud diverts less air to the cooler in an attempt at lowering head temps due to smog timing.
I have put the venturi rings on my puma and brazilia shrouds and did notice drops in both head and oil temps (average 50 cht and 20 oil temp depending on load and ambient temps). I have found that flaps have more of an affect on head temps compared to a ring alone. |

I have a stale air shroud that I think belongs to a '62, but on the front driver's side near the top edge, it has an approximately 1" diameter hole. It appears to have been factory made, as it is very clean and the edges are countersunk. Does anyone know what this hole could have been for? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

It's very puzzling because I wouldn't be able to use this shroud with that hole open like that. A lot of air would come out that way. I'd have to plug it up, which isn't a big deal, but I can't think of a reason to have a hole there in the first place. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

So no other ideas? This hole was perhaps just some previous owner's bright idea gone astray?

|
|
In reviewing the photos and comparing the '73 Type 181 (thing) shroud to the 70's doghouse shroud, am I to assume the only difference between the two is the absence of the fresh air ducts? The stampings & hole placement appear to be identical.
Am I missing something or are there other identifiers that one can use to differentiate the two?
Thanks. |

Jake Raby cut one open and stated that the directional veins are more "blunt" at the tip on a 181 shroud compared to a regular DH. Assumption is that this is for slow rpm use that a thing would see off road. I am wondering if it is only on the US 73 only shroud as it did not have a reduction box transmission like the rest of the world. |

Unfortunately, it looks like we have lost a LOT of pictures from this thread, as they were links to temporary pictures from the Classifieds section and those ads/pictures have since been removed.
Anyone have new/replacement pictures they can contribute to keep this valuable resource alive? _________________ "The new Volkswagen 1303. We've made so many improvements, they're beginning to show." |

Glad this thread came up. I have a late FI shroud and it appears that I do not need a hoover bit. Is it true that all FI shrouds do not need them, or just early or? _________________ Wash your hands
