They changed them to get more fins and more fin surface area for better cooling. |

This is generally the case. 1300 cases were able to take 1600 cylinders without maching the case. 1200 cases were not. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

Early(up to-65)and late(66 and later)style 1200 sylinders, and off the later style there is two versions, earliel whit same dimensons as early and later whit larger outer dimension at lower end(same as 1300,1500,1600.
Sorry my bad english. |

Just want to make sure i get the right one- Ill measure the stroke when i get home this evening.

As a quick check, measure the old cylinder against the new cylinder. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

No they're not interchangable. If you try to put 1200 cylinders on the 1300 engine, the pistons will be banging into the head and you will bugger the engine in no time. If you put 1300 cylinders on the 1200 engine, your compression will be down. In either scenario, your pushrod tubes, push rods, carb inlet manifold, exhaust, tinware and the like will not fit due to the difference in the stroke of the engine. There will be a difference of 10mm (just under 1/2") on the width of the engine.
The stroke is the up and down movement of the piston in the cylinder. This is determined by the crankshaft. To measure, rotate the crank till a piston is at its lowest point of travel. Measure the distance from the engine case to the top of the piston. Rotate the crank till that same piston is at its highest point of travel. Measure from the same point on the engine case to the top of the piston. The difference in measurement will be the stroke. Either 64mm (1200) or 69mm (1300).
If you have removed your cylinders off the conrods, then measure to the top of the conrod.
Hope this helps. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

thanks- im a little confused- I just pulled apart my engine -
I know it was rebuilt a few years ago.
but it is a 1200 engine (code 5742676) and it had the 1300 cylinders on it.
are they interchangeable? How do you measure the stroke? _________________ 1960 6 volt sedan- 1978 adventurewagen

The top photo with the case bolts passing the outside of the cylinders are 1200 pistons/cylinders. They are slightly shorter than the lower photo which shows the case bolts passing through the cylinder fins. These are 1300 pistons/cylinders which has a 69mm stroke as opposed to the 64mm stroke of the 1200.
Hope this helps. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.
