87 westy, original engine 194000+ miles, manual trans. Just noticed in the last 1000 miles that the engine is blowing oil vapor from a hole in the back of the engine. This hole is a machined hole to the right of cylinder #3 and is on the upright portion of the engine that bolts to the transmission. Looks like it should have a rubber plug in it. Looks like an inspection hole for the presurre plate/flywheel assembly. The Clutch appears to be ok and is not slipping. Does this oil vapor indicate that the crankcase seal is going bad? Does the engine or trans have to be completely removed to replace it? Am having other problems with the engine so may pull it this winter and get it rebuilt.
Thanks for the help and info. |

Do you have a picture? Indeed if you have an oil leak either from the "bellhousing" end of the engine or a leak from the input shaft of the transmission, you will need to separate the engine from the transmission to find the leak and repair it. Try to post a picture. _________________ ☮️ |
