Baja bugs for Volkswagen Virgins: The Book of the Car
This post will be shorter and less informative than previous posts in this series, but in my opinion this task is crucial.
My car is, and has:
- 1973 Beetle pan and body
- AH transmission, welded 3rd and 4th
- AH engine case bored for 90.5 mm cylinders, stock crank, 1776 CC, SVDA, PICT 34-3, Trimil Bobtail
- Kharmann Ghia front discs on KG spindles, requiring the puny KG outer tie rod ends
- 1966 and later Type 3 disc brakes.
- 1961 – 1968 torsion bars and end caps.
- A homebrew wiring system by a PO. Not the way I would do it, but better than most.
Some of this was learned the hard way.
In the near future it will have:
- Thing spindles and arms with KG rotors
- notched springplates, ergo:
- Thing CV flanges
- Thing axle stubs
- Type 2 Cvs
- A gas tank some people say is 16 gallons, and some say 12.5 gallons
If I broke down in Podunk Junction, and had to rely on a local shop to fix the car, I would have to remember all of this and tell the mechanic, who would have to remember all of this...
Not happening.
Which brings us to the dreaded Documentation, AKA The Book of the Car.
If you don't have a spreadsheet, or a word processor, get both and more for free at
http://download.openoffice.org/
The functional equivalent of Microsoft Office, free. Compatible with MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint files. The drawing program is not compatible with Visio.
You want to make a text file like the list above, and a spreadsheet listing:
- Part number ( Ideally both VW and your supplier number )
- Quantity needed
- Price
- Price X quantity needed
The sample shown here is for:
- converting from Type 1 CVs to Type 2
- incuding parts need to replace the transmission flange and stub axle with Thing parts
- remove and replace the spring plate for notching
- and replacing the e-brake cable and upgrading the brake hose while I'm in the neighborhood.
the color on the left is a reminder to myself - yellow has been ordered, green has not been ordered yet.
email yourself a copy
laminate a paper copy and keep it in a notebook in the car.
Make your life a little easier when you're broke, broke down and busted in Podunk Junction.

I'm off until January 2. Might knock off a couple more. Eventually I will make an index and insert it into all of them.
In the interim - just search for "virgins". you don't find many of those in HBB Offroad. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats
