Before I get shot down I did try to look but didn't find my answer. Will a fuse panel from a 12-70 ,which I would say would be a 1971 work in my 12-69 1970 ?
Thanks Karl _________________ Karl Bower |

Yes, but it'll have some bonus relay holes or they'll be shaped differently for later style units, 1 more fuse too IIRC. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hi Busdaddy
I had a good feeling that you would answer my post. I guess my next question is , if I do wire by wire exchange will the relays be in the right spot? Is there any thing I have to look for or be carefully of ? Thanks Karl _________________ Karl Bower |

Match the wire colors up and you should be OK on the relays, it may be a good idea to follow the diagram for which wires go to which end of which fuses incase there's been some PO action in there before. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

'70 uses a 4-pin flasher relay and '71 a 3-pin. not sure what the workaround will be for that. i have never tried to make that swap work. the '70 fuse panels are a pain, so it would be great if some figured out a way to make the '71 panel work in a '70. i think if you study the wiring diagrams closely enough you can make it work. you may lose the signal flashing light on the dash, or something relatively insignificant like that. _________________ SL |

the work around is a 3 pin relay hooked up according to the 71 diagram and a jumper wire off 49a for the dash lights.
you could even plug it in to the bottom of your new fuse panel
with some liberties taken from both the 71 & 70 diagram you'll get it done.
don't be intimidated.
get 2 good, color wiring diagrams from the site.
they're easy enough to follow one you're into it _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

I believe you can take a 71 box, and carefully rearrange the terminals to match the 70 layout. I haven't done it yet but plan to once I get started on my 70 dorm. _________________ -Bryan

I replaced my panel with another 70 panel and I am not happy. They both seamed like they were very brittle. The 71 I got today looks and feels like it is brand new. I know I will have some questions while I am doing the switch over.
Thanks All

Orange - will have to look at the replacement. The one I took out was split down the middle - length wise

I hope the replacement isn't orange as well or you'll be doing this all again very son. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Karl,
If you think outside the box a bit, anything is possible.
I have put several of the late panels into early bays, black 76ish ones with associated brackets, into both of the '69 SCs I've owned, into '70 and '71 campers.
As mentioned for any swap, you go circuit by circuit off a Bentley (ideally a color one if you got it.)
Benefit of later is, more circuits you can power accesories with, detriment is fitting it and brackets, and obviouslly it isn't stock. I guess in reality I could have just as easily put in aftermarket GM style panels, but the late bus ones were at hand.
Gives you a good chance to update the feed to panel if you want, correct a lot of PO wiring mishaps, etc.

I know one thing if I have any problems I will be back asking you guys for help and I know that I will get it !
Thanks in advance
