Will be watching this thread closely, for two reasons. I love double cabs! And am doing some dogleg replacement on our 79 Bay. Keep us all updated as you can. |

I feel your pain about the cold weather. It got down to 60* last night
I hope to get back at it Wednesday now that Christmas is over.
I'm doing both rockers, rear door sill repairs, and both front doors need some rust repairs and I am also replacing the engine lid and straightening the dents and dings. |

I turn on the halogen work lights, and those give me more heat than the damn portable heater I have ever will! |

Had a day off and made a little more progress
I found a lot more rot in the passenger door than I was expecting
Before
when I started grinding I found this
making patches
after welding 6 different patches and a little grinding
and the front side
and after a splash of Ospho and a quick skim coat on the door
the door is held on by two bolts and the door panel is in the corner but I can drive it to work!
Going to try and get more done Saturday!

too bad you weren't closer, i have some super solid doors. i used a dogleg like that on a friends bus. what a piece of shit. be careful you don't end up tearing the hell out of your door seal with that stupid fold over they put on it.
my buddys bus
when i did mine, i found decent OE donors. now gerson makes them
i'm repainting my bus now, so while its gutted, i may paint the floor too, but the POR-15 is holding up just fine _________________

I think I just bought those same dogleg replacement pieces for my 68 Westy Resto. Not dogging your work because it looks like you did good with what you had, but I have to agree with Skills...based upon my inspection of the pieces I got, they are shit
I was going to buy the Gerson doglegs but it looked like they were $220 per side. Not feasible for me when it is actually only the inner lower dog leg sections that need replaced on mine. I guess I'll have to see what I can do with what I have. _________________ '73 Westy (dual stock carbs, SVDA w/ compufire)

The problem with the replacement ones is poor fit and finish. That dogleg tore up a brand new seal on my buddys bus. I also forgot to mention the captive nuts that hold the side step will break loose when you torque the side step. I had to cut and weld on my back the whole biz back open and re weld a nut plate in there. Never again will I use that trash
Spend the money with gerson. Not only will it fit better you will save hours of your life _________________

First of all thanks for all the comments!
My truck is my daily driver so I'm not trying to make a show truck out of it, just trying to keep it from rusting out from under me
Yes!! I agree that Gerson makes nice products. Fact is I have his rear gate on the truck. It was pricey but it is a very nice fitting piece worth every penny I spent for it.
I Know those doglegs are not perfect but I have used them in the past on my old 69 single cab. I knew what to expect when I used them on the truck. I paid 88 bucks total for them.
Time I have lots of, but cash, not so much!
I really couldn't see the extra cost in my case.
I spent some time flattening the creases in the bends and I had to actually take a small section out of the curve in the rear of the outer piece to make it fit better! I haven't done much finish grinding on the welds yet.
I have a good seal in the door and it seems to seal and isn't tearing.
They did not come with captive nuts so I made a nut plate to attach the bumper ends. I left an opening in the front inner piece so I can slip it in and after I fit the bumper I'll plug weld the nut plate in place and fill the hole.
I was not expecting near as much rust in the passenger door.
I welded new patches in and treated the metal it should be OK.
As you know 68 doors are one year only and are pricey and a pain to find. Yes, I can convert a later door but patching was quicker and easier than trying to find another door. I do have another 68 door for the drivers side if I need it.
I'm trying to do this as I drive it every day. So after I get all the metal work done on this side I'll spend some time finishing it better
Thanks again for all the comments! |

the quality has slid even further if they don't come with the nut plates. keep up the good work! i would love to have a double cab some day. well, i do have 2 single cab's, i wonder if i......... _________________

Was able to spend a little time on the truck this morning so I
pulled the door back off and smoothed the welds a little more
And I put the first coat of filler on the dogleg
looks a lot better but I do have a low area at the weld that I need to address
the welds look a lot better
BTW that's white primer on it so it doesn't look quite as bad till I get everything ready for paint
Here is the door after a little more work
I'm going to roll with this one but I'll keep my eye out for another door.
the more I look at it the rougher it becomes.
The outside looks OK but the bottom is kind of wormy I patched the holes but I'm not sure how long it will last.
I'll keep enough paint in reserve so if I find another one I can match it.

a Quick update
I knew that the rocker had some fiberglass in it but...
I was not expecting this!
Oh well looks like I'll be buying a rocker if I can find one!
Y'all have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and be safe !

Got up this morning and rehung the door
Sent an E-mail to monkey nut to see if he has the door rocker if not I'll go straight to Gerson and see what he can do. If worse comes to worse I could probably use a bus rocker and make it fit but I hope I'll be installing some more funky green after all

Thanks for the comments !
I've watched your build over on Early bay for a while You've done wonders with what you had to start with! Excellent work I Can't wait to see it done.
Monkey Nut doesn't have the rocker in stock and with Gerson's 15% price hike it's 57.50 and then 30 bucks to ship from Colombia. Then there's the issue that I'd have to modify a split double cab rocker.
With all that said for $25.00 versus $90.00 I have decided to just modify a bus rocker. (Flame suit is on so have at it if you must)
I'll pick up one and start chopping it to fit! |

Did some more work on the rockers.
The rest of the right side is in pretty good shape.
I cleaned up along the rest of the rockers all I found was this:
After I welded in a new patch
Then I straightened the seam. It was bent sometime in the past and has bugged me since I got the truck
The new outer rocker should be here tomorrow so I cleaned up the 3rd door and inner rocker and treated with Ospho.
And the repairs are in final primer
I gave up on the white primer it was more trouble than it was worth.
I am debating what kind of paint to use. Not sure if I want to use single stage or go with a base and clear.
