I have been polishing these wheels for awhile now. The petals took about 2 1/2 hours per wheel. I did not want to spend that much time again on the lips, so I rigged up a way to speed things up a tad.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The compressor motor spins the wheel using a climbing webbing strap, so I can just hold the sand paper against the wheel as it spins. I started out with 80 grit, to try and get rid of as many dings as I could. Then I worked my way all the way up to 2000 grit, wet sanding from 400 grit up.
Once I switched to the polisher I made sure the polishing wheel and the wheel were spinning in opposite directions. This method took 1 hour per wheel.

I am pleased with the results. It's not concours quality, but I will be driving on them so....good enough for me.

Now I just need to prime and paint the background.

Gordo.

Thanks.

I am still battling with finding the best method to prep for painting these wheels.
I initially thought I would be able to use liquid masking tape and simply dip the polished portion to get a nice clean line. Then use self etching primer. The first problem was that the liquid masking tape is the consistency of porridge and did not spill out of my level container as I wanted.
The next stumbling block was that the background area of the wheel had been previously polished and was thought to be too smooth, even for self-etch primer.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now most of you are probably thinking that I am a nut case and why am I going to all this fuss, they're good enough.
Rightly so...but, when I look at the spare that I bought from CIP1.ca the paint lines on it bother me because they scream cheap knock-off fake.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

See...paint is not at one level like a Fuch should be.

So, I set out to etch my wheels. I tried regular masking tape and pin striping tape...I suck.
So I thought I would use salt water a car battery some washers and bit of wire. It looked really cool, ( be on youtube soon ) it etched, but not evenly. It was like you could see the current path, again kinda cool. just not good enough.

So, I am back at the masking tape.

This time I just laid the tape on smoothly, then made a level cutter using a 18mm Olfa rotary cutter blade, a spacer and a board.

That trimmed the tape dead level so I could then glass bead blast the wheel and apply some self etching primer.

Now I just need my color match paint to lay on them.

now would be a great opportunity to paint them like the old mag wheels, gray with just a tad of texture and a little metallic, matte. You do seem to like stuff that is different, why not different Fuchs wheels?

Well after a long drawn out search for someone to match paint to L73 Chestnut Brown and put it in a spray can for me, I came up dry. I know I could have had it mixed and sprayed by a shop, But that seemed to be over kill. Besides, what do I do if I have to touch them up at some point? Go back to a paint shop and get them sprayed again?

So I made a compromise and went with satin black wheel paint, like Porsche intended. The paint was relatively cheap, but went on nicely. It left them with a slightly textured surface that seems like it will be very durable. Peeling off the masking take was like in old movies where they are removing the bandages from someone face after having plastic surgery. You know, not really sure if this worked or not kinda thing. But all was well, iI think they turned out as I had expected, clean lines and lets the polished parts pop.

Now I just need to swap the rubber over from my wide 5s and complete the 944 brakes.

I finally swapped the tires over to the Fuchs and switched the brakes over to 944 so that I can keep the bus somewhat mobile, the wheels are on.

I still need to buy and install new rotors, wildwood callipers and pads. But there is lots to be done before brakes are needed. I will complete the e-brake portion of the conversion just make it easier to keep in one place.

Thanks.

The next step with the wheels was to get centre caps for them, however, these wheels are odd and will only accept the rarest three prong Fuch centre caps that no aftermarket repos are being produced. So once again I am improvising and making my own......out of carbon fibre.

First I used the cheap knock-off centre cap that I bought for my spare wheel (CIP1.ca) to make a mould out of gelcoat and duratek.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I waxed the mould about 4 times, sprayed it with release agent, mixed up a batch of West System's clear epoxy, layed in 4 layers of carbon fibre with one layer of e-glass and started laying it up.
I was using a vacuum press to get the air out and to help regulate the amount of resin, but the system developed a leak over night and produced some flaws in the surface. I will fix the issue before I lay up any more, but this showed me I was on the right track and they will look okay on my wheels.

You might want to paint the badge the way they are normally detailed and paint the ring bamboo. The paint detail will make that cap "pop"! They are going to look great.

I am still at.

The going has been slow, though. here is my list of excuses:

Started new job as tech at Subaru Dealership (May 2016)
became a Grampa (march 2016)
Son returned home (turning down Track scholarships)
Son becomes brakeman for National Bobsled Team (Sept. 2017)
no money for project (2012- ? )

Okay now that that is out of the way. I picked up an amp for my audio system. It was a JL Audio slash series amp, very good quality, that had to be removed from a trade-in car. My thought was to purchase a JL amp to pair with it for my system. However to get an JL amp to complete the system with the correct wattage was going to be about $1500. Crazy. So I found instead, a pair of amps on line locally that would be all I would need for my system.

And, (drum roll......)
They are Nakamichi!!!!

The two amps also came with a couple of capacitors ( now, no need to feel that I need to be educated on the futility of them, done the research got the diploma and a shirt ) that will be used in conjunction with dual battery set-up.
I thought the capacitors looked a tad bland to be mounted where anyone could see them, so they will be hidden under the rear seat. But if someone happened to look, I dressed them up a bit.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The amps are larger than what I had planned and hiding them is not going to be possible. So I plan on mounting them on the rear cargo area, but have them set flush into a solid slab of Bamboo. That way the cargo area is still usable less the 3" of lost height .

Just starting to work on the "Nos Bottle" capacitor mounts and making the bamboo cargo deck.

I will try and keep a bit more momentum going on the project, I miss working on it.

Cool, I especially like your headlight upgrade on pg 9, how is that working out and is there any other way to get more light with less effort?

Thanks, I have the same lights on my Sportbike. Very bright with a extremely clean cutoff.
As far as other easier options, not sure. I can tell you to stay away from LED bulb replacements because they may make more light, but the light goes everywhere. There is no focusing of the beam and people will flash there high-beams at you all the time. Just make sure you use a bulb designed for the lens used.

Very Happy Hey Gordo,

There is a nice Bus in Richmond, BC. I´ve spotted a couple months ago.

I've been trying to get the bus ready for paint ( been saying that for a few years now), by that, I mean every hole drilled, every piece fitted then removed. But, I just keep finding more things that need to be done, or....the things that could just be a simple thing to do expand into a project of their own. The snowball effect. Well if that snowball turned into a massive 300 room 5 star snow hotel, anyways.

Here is where I am at now.

I wanted to mount two of my amps in the cargo area. I wanted them to be somewhat framed, yet protected. I opened up a slab of Bamboo to the size of the Amps. then built a bezel of sorts to support the bamboo flush with the tops of the amps.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The Bamboo also had to be hinged to allow access to the amp adjustments. And the bezel needed to hide the wiring, for a clean look.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Once fitment is complete I will be able to locate the spots where I need to drill holes for the power cables, prior to paint.
I still need to mount the third amp behind the driver's seat. It will be mounted in a Bamboo tapered Bezel/mounting bracket.

For the longest time I thought I couldn't justify spending $$$$ on Safari Windows. Yet, they always had a place in my CIP1.ca wishlist. To me, they are one of the most Iconic symbols a VW Bus. And when ever someone sees my bus (in it's current state) they ask me "will it have those cool windows that open up front?" So...it really wasn't that big of a push to make me justify the purchase.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Just one more thing to install and remove , before Paint.

One last thing , since I have been speaking of paint. My Bus will be going for Paint the end of September this year.

Those of you that have followed the build from the start , where I announced my colour choices.....it won't be that.

They are currently filming a Nicolas Cage movie at my house (the bus might get a cameo appearance), but once that is wrapped up I will have to get down to finishing the fitments needed before paint.

Gordo.
