My 1961 engine lid hinges look dubious - hard to tell if this is abuse done by POs. How is the hinge supposed to be? Are those screws in mine a hack? (they are what limit the lid's movement). If so, what is supposed to stop the lid from hitting the car? Please post pictures of yours! Thanks

Thanks, but these pictures don't show the area behind the hinge (between the hinge and the decklid) where I have those nasty bolts welded which make the hood stop (see my 1st picture).

Looks like your hinges have been bent 90 degrees to offset the decklid (or some other reason, only known to the PO)

I don't see the bolts you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure you can lose them when you replace the hinges with some un-bent ones-the hinge acts as the stop, when it's not bent to $hit like yours are.....

That screw in the first picture is a hack job all the way.

I'm not sure I understand what bend you're referring to. The bolt/screw I was talking about is the thing protruding out of that nasty bulge as can be clearly seen in the first picture. It acts as a stop when hitting the bent arm in the fully open position (as in the pics).

The hinge should have a very slight upward bend, not be bent into an "L" like yours are,and they should extend 3/8" to 1/2"past the "horns" they are bolted to,like in the first pic from wayne1230cars.
I wasn't getting your first pic this morning,so I wasn't sure what screw you were speaking of-definitely see it now.
Yours have been pretty mangled for some reason, and the screws are stops to keep the lid from opening too far and hitting the body.(you knew that)
If the hinges are straight, like they should be,the hinges themselves act as the stops .

Thanks guys for your input. After carefully studying the pictures, I realized my hinges are the culprit. I went ahead and ordered a new (used) pair. doc1976 - it is practically impossible to obtain another decklid - my beetle is 1 of 4 in the country.

Are the hinges welded to the deck lid? It's kinda hard to see under all the muck and paint I have there.
