87 2.1 westy
My temp gauge in the dash cluster is dead, my question is "does the gauge have any correlation to the ECM. Or does the temp signal going to the brain come from another source.
Here's my problem, poor gas mileage, I went from 16 to 12 , But it runs great, starts great , idles great.
I'm not sure if I'm running in a rich setting from the brain or if the O2 sensor is acting up.
Does "winter" gas effect the mileage that much?
THX.
Happy Holidays everyone |

I remember reading a recent thread that someone mentioned gas mileage will decrease during the winter. I think it's because the time it takes to get to operating temperature is longer. My commute to work is pretty short and my mileage wasn't the best but noticed a huge difference on a recent trip down to Ouray to go ice climbing.

The gauge is fed directly from the temp sender on the front of the t-stat housing...
(edit: removed reference to incorrect sender #)
Crawl under the van ahead of the driver's rear tire, check your connections & report back.
Someone else will have to help w/the MPG problem... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

The gauge sender is number #3.
#1 and #2 are used by the fuel injection. #1 is in the airflow meter and is part of it. Calling the gauge sender #1 misleads people because the fuel injection trouble shooting references the true #1.

Edited and corrected - thanks.
I tried but had not seen sender #'s specified anywhere in Bentley...???
FWIW, still suspicious of the gauge sender &/or connection for the OP's problem... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

I and II are labeled as such in various places, though their generic names are used in other places instead or in addition.
Bentley page 24.28 has the Temp I test procedure.
Page 24.32 has Temp II.
The wbx models have 3 temp senders. Since the two fuel injection temp senders use the official labels Temp 1 and Temp 2 that leaves the third for the gauge, unlabeled by a number, so lets call it #3 rather than a number already in use by the other senders.
